Marie Newman, the progressive candidate in Illinois’ Democratic primary, beat incumbent conservative Democrat Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) during the state’s elections on Tuesday night.
Lipinski, who has been in office since 2005, often bucked his party’s left-leaning stances, having voted against abortion rights, the Affordable Care Act and LGBTQ rights. He also declined to endorse President Barack Obama in the 2012 election.
But despite the Illinois congressman’s conservative record, the Democratic establishment has thrown its support behind him.
“The Democratic establishment”: @tena and others, kindly take note – and not only of its existence, which seems to baffle you, but also its behavior.
With Lipinski out, I guess the so-called “House Problem Solvers Caucus” has a new problem on its hands.
Last night Rachel said that the calculus for Bernie getting out is different now because of the difficulties of voting in the age of COVID-19, so the Dems could stop the primary process. I love Rachel and she’s usually spot-on, but I was yelling at the TV on this one. Most state primaries have other races on the ballot, sometimes dozens of other races. This result shows how important those down-ballot primaries can be.
The support behind Lipinski is what is meant by ‘the establishment.’ @ghost I feel you utterly here. I usually love Rachel but I don’t care much about the Kool-Aid she’s been trying out lately.
