“Americans have not only unalienable rights, but also positive rights, rights granted by governments, courts, multilateral bodies. Many are worth defending in light of our founding; others aren’t,” he asserted.
Pompeous got it bassackwards again.
The United States government does not grant Rights. The Constitution, written by representatives of We The People enumerates the Rights that We The People have given to ourselves and have listed in that document to notify our government, so that those Rights would not be infringed.
Some Rights aren’t worth defending? Really? What an asshole!
It’s interesting how many hard core religious conservatives infest the Trump administration, despite his blatant moral failings. When JFK ran for president, he had to deal with concerns that he’d be taking orders from Rome, that his faith would override the separation of church and state. People like Pompeo and Barr don’t think the current Pope is Catholic enough.
It’s getting to be a horse race between straight up fascism versus theocratic fascism.
“Rights granted by courts” means “activist liberal judges” doing this “legislating from the bench” thing. Specifically, Roe v Wade. Or maybe Brown v Board if you dig deep enough into the basket.
“Rights granted by multilateral bodies” means “all those foreigners at the United Nations inventing things like the right to health care or a decent education”, which of course can only end in socialism and the dreaded one-world government of RWNJ end times fantasy.
“Rights granted by governments”, of course, is code for “we’ve got to erase every administrative action of the Obama Administration”.
We’ve been identified as the mortal enemy of evangelicals since before the Scopes Monkey trial.
They are so invested in, for example, in the claim “They’ve taken prayer and God out of the school!”(no, the Supreme Court upheld no establishment of religion…means no Government money for religious observance).
In 1966 or so, in Hayesville NC, our 4th Grade home room had a daily devotional: someone, the teacher or a student (generally a preacher’s kid: you can’t swing a cat without hitting a church, probably Southern Baptist or an offshoot) would bring in a daily bible reading, a little homily related to it and a prayer. The Methodist one was called “The Upper Room”).
One day Kathy, a preacher’s daughter, read one that had a passage (Deuteronomy? Judges?)about not mixing wIth other tribes, and the homily was on the evils of Race mixing.
It’s become a core proposition of White Southern Christianity that God wants Racial Purity, White Superiority, and folks to stay in their “place”.
Let me suggest this is at least part of what Pompeo and the Xtian Suprematists want,
Anyone who professes fundamentalist religious belief should be barred from any public office (and I include Roman Catholicism in that group). Anyone who is beholden to some bunch of liars and manipulators that comprise fundi religion is not capable of critical thought.
I just find it 1)interesting and 2) frustrating that human beings are human. And if me being a human being is somehow offensive then fucking deal with it. Because as we have seen it doesn’t stop with sexuality, race, gender, or even religion.
If you has a human being, practicing whatever religion you practice, can’t exist with other other human beings that don’t follow your religious dogma, or any religious dogma, than it’s you that has a problem, not the rest of us.
