Vice President Mike Pence responded to the White House’s sobering projection of up to 240,000 fatalities from COVID-19 during an interview on CNN Wednesday.

After Blitzer mentioned that he asked his question based on Trump’s past remarks — which include saying that the coronavirus wasn’t as bad as the regular flu — Pence said that the President is “an optimistic person.”
So… he did belittle it, but it doesn’t count because he is an “optimistic person”. It you are “optimistic” then bullshitting is okay.

In the end, regardless of how many Americans die as a result of Trump’s incompetence, callousness, willful neglect and self-serving narcissism, it will all be white-washed by the press and the GOP. Trump will be hailed as a miracle-worker and a fierce protector of America. It’s enough to kick-start a vomit.
It should be noted that there were never really strong travel restrictions, and no testing, or even really questioning, of people coming into the nation. It was a paper announcement, meant more to hit China than to protect Americans.
Pence is, of course, lying about Trump playing down what was going on, no surprise there. The fact is that the virus was coming here, and no amount of preparation could have stopped that. It was likely already here in late December or early January, just because people travel. What does matter is the preparation and reaction, and the administration completely failed there.
Consider…South Korea has about 10,000 cases today, and 165 deaths, and have leveled off. We are over 200,000 cases now, and nearly 5000 deaths, and show little sign of leveling off aside from places that locked down early in WA and CA. We should be more like Korea…even if you take into account us being larger and having more travel interactions with the world, we should be leveled off like they are, and maybe 10 times the number of cases and deaths (and I think that’s high). It’s almost unthinkable that the Trump administration failed so badly that 1-200,000 Americans are likely to die, and yet here we are. Don’t let them get away with calling this “a good job”, it’s nothing of the sort.
Just days ago Trump set the bar at 100.000 deaths … and smugly thought he had set himself up for an easy lay-up.
