Fresh off the floor from the historic House impeachment vote against President Trump. Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanded that the Senate conduct a fair trial and bashed Senate Majority Leader’s promise that he’ll handle it in coordination with the White House. But she wobbled on the question of whether she would hold back transmitting the impeachment articles until the Senate process is clear.
She obviously had this ready to unload as soon the Articles of Impeachment passed in the House. There is no sense in letting McConnell make a mockery of the process and if he complains that they are waiting for the House to pass the process on to them, it gives Pelosi a chance to explain why that isn’t happening, i.e., their intention is to continue the coverup of Trump’s criminal behavior and Pelosi’s actions will keep it in the news.
But Pelosi polished it off nicely by stating the fact that the next step is the House appointments of Impeachment Managers and, she added, that can’t be sorted out until the Senate has ironed out how they are going to proceed.
Pelosi explained that [paraphrase] we can’t make any manager assignments until we know what skills will be needed by our selected members depending on the process the Senate is going to use. Something to that effect.
The smart thing would be to get a resolution passed, continuing the impeachment investigation, and now going to court to force the witnesses to testify and get the documents.
The worst thing Pelosi could do is just hold on to the articles, without a clear and unambiguous purpose. She needs to have a purpose, other than “I’m not happy with Mitch”.
ETA: BTW. the 'withhold the articles to stop Trump from claiming exoneration" has been something that I’ve been advocating since I showed back up here – and got tons of grief for suggesting it was possible. Yeah, its a good move — but its the move I’ve been advocating for ages…
I saw the beginning of his rally (sound off) and noticed his face was the usual orange. But, I thought it was the lights in the WH. None of his fans behind him had the orange glow.
The more I think about it, the more sense this makes. She has time to see how things shake out over the Christmas holidays. And even beyond that, but I think it would require a public relations campaign to convince the public of the unfairness of the Senate Republican leadership’s current position.
