Pelosi Announces Select Committee To Probe Capitol Attack After GOP Tanked Commission | Talking Points Memo

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Thursday that House Democrats will form a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection that then-President Trump helped incite, following Senate Republicans’ deployment of the filibuster to kill the bill that would have created a bipartisan commission to do the same work.

Speaker Pelosi, who represents me in Congress, seems to be the only member of the House who gets things done from initiating impeachment proceedings to insulting the loser when no one else is able to and now this, the committee as imperfect as it may be, in order to probe the loser. I can get behind that.

This is absolutely necessary…there has to be a real investigation into what happened. It’s also going to be a mess, as the Republicans are almost guaranteed to appoint people like Jim Jordan to the committee simply to gum up the works. It is very likely they will run into the same buzzsaw that Gen. Milley unleashed on Matt Gaetz yesterday though, simply because there are a lot of people who are aghast at what happened and infuriated that Republican politicians are attempting to downplay it.

I hope they get subpoena power and use it to cut through the nonsense and get to the facts of what happened, as well as what drove it. That’s really the only way to make sure Americans get the truth of it all, hopefully in time for them to decide in 2022 if they want to allow the Republicans to continue to hold power when they were egging on the insurrectionists and continue to support them.

Go Nancy!

Not ideal, but if done credibly (i.e., the opposite of the GOP’s Cirque de Benghazi), it can keep the issues alive and add to what DOJ is doing with the insurrection perps. Also, no limitations on the duration and breadth of the investigation, and no need to negotiate with the pro-terrorist party.

Wonderful move, IF the Select Committee can somehow enforce the plethora of subpoenas needing to be issued.

This reminds me of a cartoon where the judge addresses a defendant on the stands remark by saying:

“Actually this IS the appropriate time to play the blame game”.

As a Select Committee, does the GQP even get to select representation? Do they even get any seats? I could certainly see the Speaker appointing some of the few sane Republican House members who correctly believe that 1/6 was an insurrection that needs investigating.

Any bets on who the Repugs will appoint. I bet it will not be Liz Cheney.

Obviously one will be Jim Jordan. But I am also thinking of Gohmer, MTG, Elsie Stefanik, Lauren Boebert,

actually, there is a list of about 136 to chose from. The real question is which Republicans, if any, will McCarthy pick to be on the committee who did not vote against certification.

The bad thing here is we will be subject to BS from Gym Jordan, MTG, Gohmert and Gaetz. Maybe Pelosi can make a rule that any Congress member under investigation by any legal agency cannot be appointed. That would disqualify Gym and Matt.

Does McCarthy get to appoint anyone to Nancy’s committee?

The members of Select Committees are appointed by the Speaker. From House Practice:

House committees are of three distinct types: (1) standing committees, whose members are elected by the House, (2) select committees (also called special committees), whose members are appointed by the Speaker, and (3) joint committees, whose members are chosen according to the provisions of the statute or concurrent resolution creating them. Variations of these three categories are discussed in later sections.

Also
Select committees are established (usually outside the standing rules) to consider a particular matter or subject and may or may not have legislative jurisdiction. A select committee often expires when it issues its final report on the matter for which it was created.

So this committee will be established by Nancy Pelosi. I doubt that Gym Jordan or the child molester will be on it.

Thanks, that answered my question or worries in a previous post. I would hope she appoints a few thoughtful Republicans on this matter such as Kinzinger and Cheney.

Isn’t there a solid legal principal that someone suspected of a crime doesn’t get to investigate it?

No GOP member with any connection to the insurrection must be allowed on that committee.

And no one involved in the coverup – like McCarthy – should be allowed to appoint GOP members.

Any firewall short of that is akin to allowing al-Qaeda terrorists to sit on the 9/11 Commission.

“…Pelosi said she is not worried about findings by the committee being dismissed, and that she hopes McCarthy will “appoint responsible people” to the committee.”

Well, sorta. McCarthy will make a visit to Mar-A-Lardo to find out who he’s gonna pick.

That’s what I thought - thank you so much.

From the article:

When asked about House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) remarks panning the select committee as a “political” move, Pelosi said she is not worried about findings by the committee being dismissed, and that she hopes McCarthy will “appoint responsible people” to the committee.

Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney should be on it.

Oh, excellent news…

I think we know exactly what McCarthy is going to do, appoint gas lighters to be as disruptive as possible as a show to the base and more importantly to get short new spats to the accidental low information voter.

That is you have 3 groups of people, two groups know exactly what happened, one for and one against the insurrection. A third or low information people whose only attention is the 30 second they happen to hear from a radio or TV show they happen to be watching at the time.

The Repug strategy will be to put on the committee flame throwers who for whatever reason will be most likely to say something absorbs those 30 seconds that the low information people by accident hear.
