Let us hope Nancy has her nut cuttin’ tool stropped & ready to use.
At the very least, I would hope the Ds can reject McCarthy’s nominees until he puts up acceptable people.
OR FBI-hunting pedos from FL who may be in jail before the committee can finish it’s business.
Yes, McCarthy will appoint all the Republican members. He will - for certain - appoint “crazies” to the Committee. Maybe not all of his appointments, but enough to turn the Committee into a launching pad for all the vilest Republican arguments about how this attack was a production of Democrats and Antifa. Think of their Benghazi hearings as merely the appetizer,
I like Pelosi a lot, but I think her chasing of this Commission/Committee investigation is the most wrong- headed thing she has ever done. It will provide the Republicans with the attack lines for the 2022 Congressional elections, energizing their crazy base.
We need grand juries, indictments and convictions. The last thing we need is preening, prancing, pontificating Congressmen sucking all the air out of the Biden agenda.
Interesting dilemma for McCarthy. If he appoints Republicans to the commission, he can’t very easily call it partisan. But if he doesn’t, the commission is truly free of all obstruction and their usual intransigence to explore Republican participation in the insurrection.
In either case, I’m sure Democrats will hold the majority on the commission.
As I understand it, Speaker Pelosi can populate the committee however she wants… the organizing resolution will pass by Democrats with GQP folks gnashing their teeth. I suspect that Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger will be among the Republicans that the Speaker will “select”… she has all the Republicans who backed the original bi-partisan commission to choose from. You won’t see Boebert, Greene, Gaetz or Jordan among the “selections”.
You’re thinking of Liz Cheney. Mary is her gay sister that she repeatedly threw under the bus.
Because family values.
Speaker Pelosi has had a long career, but today’s presser has to rank amongst her most consequential: she announced a 1/6 Commission and that the game changing reconciliation bill is a requirement.
Okay, so we have it from the Speaker’s lips that the Republicans will be appointing their own members. Bad move. Let’s hope that the rules for the Select Committee will not be what we’ve been seeing over and over and over since the first impeachment (or earlier), where each member gets to bloviate and lie and bluster and mug for the cameras, for their allotted five minutes, or other designated time period. I’d like to see organized, professional interrogations by lawyers and investigators who know what they’re doing and have a plan for obtaining actual information.
Skip the individual member show-off sessions.
she hopes McCarthy will “appoint responsible people” to the committee.
Responsible for what, exactly?
The usual suspects? Jordan, Gohmert, Gaetz, Taylor-Greene? Just cut the mikes when time’s up.
If she allows him to do so.
She can appoint every member herself, or she can share the appointment duties with Qevin—which seems to me to be highly unlikely.
There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth by the House GQP over this.
It’s going to be delicious.
Sorry – it’s Pride month…
Words cannot express how monumental this can be .
I hope that the Speaker assembles a powerful, well grounded, persuasive and brilliant committee - one that will swiftly but comprehensively assemble & analyze all of the critical elements - in a way that becomes virtually indisputable … and in a way that true historians from across the spectrum of liberal to moderate to conservative will accept as the genuine unarguable essence of what transpired.
This is important - very important - there should be no ‘enhancement’ of the facts - just lay them out bluntly, starkly and precisely … there will still be those who will want to scribble on the truth with a sharpie - but make the truth so clear and robust and loud that none but the seriously deranged will contemplate pushing an alternative narrative … lay the events out in such an indisputable and truthful way that all legitimate historians will treat it with reverence.
Question - can the Speaker appoint outside individuals to a select committee - or is it a members only matter? … there are a number of distinguished non-Democrat individuals who could lend additional credibility, impartiality and strength to the effort.
Please, please do this right ! … it is going to be difficult but all efforts must be made to push through the political flack - and the flack will get intense - especially if the exposing of the truth is destined to reveal that a number of political figures actively conspired and worked to engineer an absolute overthrow of the United States government.
The efforts of this committee could be the most important proceedings of this century!
She is a marvel. The nation is well served with her as Speaker.
We have grand juries and indictments and guilty pleas. We have over 500 cases filed from Jan. 6.
Congress was attacked; Nancy Pelosi was in physical danger. I think she has every reason to investigate.
I’m not sure…in the past Select committees were usually bipartisan, with leadership sending members, but that was when the Republicans were sane. It actually would be good if Pelosi is able to appoint Republicans who are actually reasonable, something actually might get done then.
The damage done by including Republicans on this panel far exceeds the political appearance problem of excluding them.
When they object simply retort that they were offered a joint investigation and rejected it. If they have problems with a Democrats only panel they can take it up with McConnell.
Why give them a platform for more lies?
It’s for appearances, so that people can’t claim the Democrats set up a panel to get the result they wanted…having the Republicans there gives cover against that. If it’s a bunch of Republican assholes like Jordan then they would release a separate report claiming that BLM/Antifa had pretended to be Trump supporters and convinced innocent “tourists” to enter the Capitol. I would bet Pelosi will get at least a few Republicans like Kitzinger who want a real investigation on there, which will make it clear that any Republicans dealing nonsense are covering for the insurrectionists.
Who cares what they claim? They can issue all the lame denials they want.
This is far less of a problem than dealing with continual grandstanding and obstructing every to be the committee tries to get anything done. Not to mention GQPers tipping off targets of the investigation.
We make our case by laying out the evidence …Not by letting them lay out lies.
Democrats have been forced to hold informal basement hearings on topics of interest ti them. it’s time to let the Republicans try that.
