Opposite Days

Hello. It’s the weekend. This is The Weekender :coffee: It helps me to look at Trump’s most outrageous political appointments as opposites. The top law enforcement job? Give it to a guy investigated for sex trafficking. Running the intelligence community? How about the Assad sympathizer. The Pentagon? Why not award it to a Fox News…

Maybe he’ll just stroke out in public and make our lives better.

People who were working two or three jobs to make ends meet during the Biden administration will soon be completely underwater.

“Daddy’s home. And things are gonna change. And we’re gonna go back to being a strong America.” Emine Yucel reads this, "…we can still laugh at a grown man calling another grown man, who is in no way related to him, ‘daddy.’”

But it made me think of the guy – I think it was Hegseth or maybe Tucker Carlson, or maybe each of them at different times – who went on a rant that included the importance of disciplining children (which, of course, parents and teachers on the “radical left” never do), including spanking them, and concluded his harangue, “The scariest words to a child are, ‘Just wait until your father gets home.’”

The man of the house returns from a hard day at work (well, maybe some time out for a sexual tryst – to be expected of a manly man), is greeted at the door by his devoted wife who, of course, has no work outside the home, and hears her report of the misbehavior and disobedience of one of their children (which she could not properly handle because, well, you know, the weaker sex). Daddy sets things right – things are gonna change --, marches to the errant child’s bedroom (where Mom has sent the recalcitrant child) and administers a good old-fashioned whooping. God’s in his heaven and all’s right with the world.

I’m with you on our lives would be better if Trump were to shuffle off this mortal coil, but that is offset by the ascension of president Vance. The low information cultists might disappear, but Trumpism is now GOP policy.

Yeah, we are pretty fucked for at least two more years, but at this point I need hope. An MI, stroke, lightning bolt, meteorite, garbage truck with failed brakes, giant sinkhole, really big fucking alligator on the 10th green, esophagus-lacerating tortilla chip, or whatever, would be nice.

The policies wouldn’t change under Vance, but I’d prefer Trump dead and Vance in charge if there is another national crisis like a 9/11 scale attack. Or worse, a terrorist nuke going off in the middle of NYC.

Vance is a culture warrior asshole, but at least compared to Trump he’s… what’s the word… more stable? Less impulsive? I don’t think he’d nuke the entire Middle East in response. Trump would.

“What would Mother say?”

“And what would Mommy say?”

Or, as Tucker Carlson purportedly said after the 2020 election, “what he’s good at is destroying things. He’s the undisputed world champion of that.”

Tucker Carlson is clearly not as stupid as he plays on the teevie.

Anyone catch the irony of stripping the Justice department of its civil rights and voting rights sections? The very reason that President Ulysses Grant created the Justice Department in the first place?

That said, I’m surprised the Elected Felon isn’t just keeping Merrick Garland on as AG. The man has been doing so much for him and his fellow Republicans!

So the GOP has evolved from an Oedipus complex to a village of macho, macho men.

I vote for the alligator on the 10th green.

That would be epic, but his Secret Service detail would interfere. I vote for a lightning strike while golfing. We could piss off the evangelicals by saying God did it.

Tucky hasn’t had an original thought in his life. ETTD (Thanks, Rick!)

I appreciate the TPM team’s determination to find some humor in this moment. It’s about the only way I’m able to cope too.

My re-read of To Kill a Mockingbird–okay, re-listen, because audiobooks let me make stuff while I enjoy a great book–is also turning out to be therapeutic. The other day, I mentioned that it felt like Maycomb had just convicted Tom Robinson. That analogy seems really apt: a tiny majority decided not to elect Dems based on lies, no evidence, their desire to own the libs, etc. When Atticus tells Scout that they’re fighting their neighbors, that really hit home to me.
