Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) took to Twitter soon after vicious chants of “send her back” broke out at President Donald Trump’s rally Wednesday night, implying that the congresswoman, who is an American citizen, ought to be deported to Somalia from where she fled when she was a pre-teen.
I feel very badly for these young WOC that are being casted as the problem in this country. Their lives, at least for the immediate future, are going to be harder than I can imagine. They are going to be on the defensive, for what? Being WOC and speaking out?
At least she was able to use poetry to respond to the loud, juvenile chanting of tRump’s supporters.
A friend, I was talking to last night, reminded me that we’re still the country that elected Obama. I said really, that wasn’t that long ago but it doesn’t feel like the same country.
On Twitter (a colleague tells me) there were those who were particularly incensed at Omar’s head covering, demanding that someone pull it off her. Clearly, Trump has succeeded in singling Omar out because of her outward signs of religion.
I wonder how Jews react to this, since Muslims are not the only faith in which covering the head when outside is a sign of respect to God. My reaction to all this is the same as Favreau’s, and it’s not too far to see the similarities with Nazi Germany in the mid-30’s, before the Krystalnacht.
A suggestion: Ilhan Omar should never be seen in public without some visible symbol of American patriotism – a red, white and blue head scarf, a big ass flag pin, and so on.
I’m of the mind that it’s time to quit responding to Toadglans’ taunts. It just gives him more air. The worst that can be done to him, like a petulant child, is to ignore him.
I expect she rather quietly has better security, as a particularly controversial Member of Congress, than is or should be visible.
My point is that it is the height of goddam political stoooopidity not to remind people in every visual that Ilhan Omar is America incarnate, regardless of anything else.
