Now, this will be interesting. Let’s see how quickly the NRA-Ammosexual Caucus excoriates him for “breaking ranks.”

Once more bravely into the breach, certain of the safely symbolic nature of his gesture.

I don’t think the remaining 99+% of American citizens are NOT opposed to being shot.

It’s just that there are so many people who are okay with other people being shot.

Colorado passed a red flag law this year. As I understand it, the law allows for guns to be confiscated on a judge’s orders when requested by family members or law enforcement. Hearings would follow the confiscation after which guns would be returned or the confiscation upheld.

A number of county sheriffs have vowed not to enforce, citing 2nd Amend issues and risks to deputies (risk to deputies?).

And - of course - many conservatives feel that the hearing should come before the confiscation…

I notice that he did not suggest banning assault weapons.

Or anything that would have stopped the shooter in Dayton from getting his toys…

I am still waiting patiently for some gun enthusiast or “Second Amendment originalist” (you know, like Mr. Ginny Thomas on the SC) to explain to me why any American, outside of the military, should have access to an assault weapon. Hey, I’ve got he time. I’ll sit here and let you explain it to me, point by point. Go ahead.

The one excuse that drives me fucking crazy is that there are people who collect these weapons, like Franklin Mint plates or wheat pennies. And that the Second Amendment gives them that right. OK, motherfucker. I’ll give you that one. But here, try this one on for size:

There’s this guy down the street who likes to collect child pornography, and the right to read whatever we want and to write whatever we want and to publish whatever we want is enshrined in the First Amendment, which is just as important and defensible as the Second, so I take it that since you will defend someone who collects weapons that destroy lives you will also defend a person who collects literature that destroys the lives of children, since his right to collect child pornography would be just as sacrosanct as a gun collectors right to collect AK-47s.

Correct? How come you’re not answering?

Same thing in Oregon. County sheriffs are stating publicly that they will not enforce the law. One of the ironies of this stance is that many Eastern Oregon counties are short on law enforcement because the voters refuse to raise the taxes to pay for it. Should we call it the Wild East?

And the GOP immediately went into action launching recall petitions against Democratic senators and representatives who voted for the law, and our Democratic governor who signed it. They aren’t fond of the democratic election process that produced a legislature and administration that are not under GOP control.

“DeWine is a RINO! I refuse to vote in 2020 if he caves to the Libs on the 2nd Amendment!!”

Oh, I can just hear the screeching now!

I’m pretty stunned a Cro-Magnon moron like DeWine is even responding to the people demanding he do something. Republicans always get away with ignoring the voters, but maybe this is a tipping point?

Chump change either way.

Because the racist in the White House can’t help himself and has to go where he’s not wanted so he can be seen and heard, he’s going to both Dayton and El Paso tomorrow. It’ll be his chance to warn the governor off his lofty goals by threatening tweet blasts.

When you hear “do something!” and “shame on you” and you didn’t expect to, it has a way of motivating a pol to do say something in response.

But this is shocking and there’s no immediate relief on the horizon.

A database by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University shows that there have been 23 mass killings so far this year, claiming the lives of 131 people. By comparison, 140 people died in mass killings in all of 2018. The database tracks every mass killing in the country dating back to 2006.

Or, frankly, any weapon. “Well regulated militia” = armed forces today, and the militia referred to in the second amendment is the same militia referred to in Article I, Section 8 and Article II, Section 2. 2A is not a non-sequitur.

But I take your point. I could be ok with an interpretation that allows handguns and non-assault weapon type rifles if we can require strong background checks, training and insurance.
