Ohio Gov Pushes Background Checks, Red Flag Laws After Shooting

Republicans kill people and things.

That’s way off. There have been 122 mass shootings in which almost 130 people have died since the beginning of June.

It’s a terrible thing to even be debating the numbers of mass shootings.

A group called Everytown For Gun Safety also has a compilation of gun violence broken down into accidental, homical, domestic violence. The data on gun violence involving children is heartbreaking.

https://everytown.org/

  • Firearms are the second leading cause of death for American children and teens and the first leading cause of death for Black children and teens.21
  • Nearly 1,700 children and teens die by gun homicide every year.22 For children under the age of 13, these gun homicides most frequently occur in the home and are often connected to domestic or family violence.23
  • Black children and teens are 14 times more likely than white children and teens of the same age to die by gun homicide.24

It’s mass killings vs. mass shootings, two different metrics.

Insurance for the victims, not NRA lawyer-insurance for the gun owner who was the shooter or whose child was the accidental shooter.

Yes, I meant liability insurance.

I see the fake butthurt over playing politics with this issue is in full swing. Politics is the process of firing the racist prick who incites this violence, and all the other worse than useless pricks who empower and enable him just by being Republicans. So you’re damned right we’re playing politics.

Disgusting. I understand that there is great risk responding to domestic violence calls, but this indicates that they don’t give a shit about the risks posed to family members, i.e., women and children.

Let’s see what he does, if anything.

You need to remember that DeWine was Attorney General. The loopholes for the red flag laws will be big enough to drive a semi through (it will probably require committment, for example) and the legislature will not likely pass the background check bill. There is only 1 Democratic state representative and 0 Democratic state senators in Dayton and it’s surrounding counties (all the Democrats are gerrymandered into his district).

It’s bad here in Ohio.

Good catch. I left out that 56 of the 122 shootings resulted in fatalities. And that’s just since June 1st.

Obviously, there can’t be less mass killing incidents or victims than there can be fatal shooting incidents or victims.

ETA: @littlegirlblue, I’d be interested in the link to those studies to see why there’s such a large discrepancy.

They won’t answer because it’s still too uncool to admit they really do feel the same way about their porn stashes.

Probably because the mass shootings is four or more people shot, while the mass killings is four or more dead. So you have a lot more mass shootings than mass killings, but the overall death toll will be larger by including shootings with 1-3 dead.

Yeah…That’s been floated as an excuse for an armed citizenry.

You’re assuming gun enthusiasts are reading what you write. Dude, it’s gonna be a long wait.

Yep. No assult/murder, then no crime and no response necessary.

… and real training including safe storage, unloaded carry, frequent practice, and so forth.

Makes sense. I’d still be curious about the other studies, but I could probably find them on the interwebs.

But let’s keep the goddamn laws on the books anyway. Remember when first seat belt laws then child car seat laws were pooh-poohed becasue no one would let the gubmin tell ‘em what to do in dey own cars or wit’ dey own chirren? You cannot always outrun stupidity, but you can outlast it a lot of the time.

Not sure I follow your meaning, so forgive me if I’m misreading. I’m only trying to condemn the governor, who’s playing at righteousness because he knows the GOP legislators will provide the cushion he needs to do nothing. I’m all for the politics that sees to the Racist-in-Chief’s removal from office, particularly since it’s primarily (if not exclusively) driven by authentic moral outrage, rather than the shadow-boxing in play with the governor.
