Ohio GOPer Suggests ‘Colored’ Americans ‘Do Not Wash Their Hands As Well As Other Groups’

As the Ohio state Senate was discussing a resolution that would declare racism a public health crisis earlier this week, state Sen. Steve Huffman (R), who is also a doctor, offered a racist theory as to why black communities have been hit harder by the COVID-19 outbreak than others.

From WaPo:

In a phone interview with The Washington Post late Wednesday, Huffman defended himself, insisting that his language was not intended to be derogatory. Huffman added that he thought the phrases “people of color” and “colored population” were similar.

From the Google, Tipp City, OH is where he is a emergency doctor and lives, it is 95.8% white.
And for fucks sake he is 3 years younger than me, and “colored people” was not used in the 60s, at least north of the Mason Dixon line.

“Regrettably, I asked a question in an unintentionally awkward way that was perceived as hurtful and was exactly the opposite of what I meant,”

There is no hope for some of these people.

They will never see that ‘awkward’ does not define how racist both the statement and the walk back are.

Please go join a Trump rally and save us from your crap in the future.

What sort of medical doctor is he? Where did he attend medical school? Does he have a current medical license?

Please look this stuff up and add it to the story. It will take 5 minutes.

‘There’s just too much material’

Harry Shearer has announced he is temporarily suspending his weekly hour-long Le Show and substituting it with an expanded version of his “Apologies of the Week” segment. The hour-long Les Excuses de la Semaine will air in the same time slot on all outlets until Le Show returns, probably in February or March 2021.

Could it be the State Sen. Huffman’s intelligence level is due to his parents being first cousins, or brother and sister, or the result of a human woman’s torrid but forbidden love affair with Bat Boy? A lot of people are saying it. I’m just asking questions!

It would be nice if I could Pelosi’s press conference here at TPM live instead of going elsewhere to watch it.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday morning is expected to hold a weekly press conference where she will give remarks regarding the ongoing protests over George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. EDT.

and why is this ‘news’???

Many of the people I’ve met who are the worst at washing their hands are those in the medical field.

I think he’s projecting.

It’s a new GOP policy.

“The President senator was raising questions based on a report that he saw. They’re questions that need to be asked.”

You know who is bad about washing their hands? - doctors.

Don’t laugh. In the early 90s we set up a quality improvement initiative in the hospital where I was working and did a 2 week study of how many people washed their hands entering and/or exiting seeing patients in ICU beds. Doctors were the worst offenders by far A lot of them, when confronted later with the results of the anonymous study (offenders were not identified by name), said something to the effect of “yes, I am so busy - I know I should do better”.

Truly, we all need to do better. One thing we don’t need about is some new theory about why people of color are hit worse by a pandemic when we already have the cold hard facts of poverty, crowding and systemic prejudice within the healthcare system.

Having family roots near this region of Ohio - I know that are many who are mortified - just absolutely nauseated by this cretin’s utterances … but sadly there are many locals (no matter how much schooling they have had ) who share his view … and they also have some grotesquely bigoted questions that they will ask about Jews, Greeks, Asians, Hispanics … and even Catholics…
