New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb (R) was arrested after driving while intoxicated on New Years Eve — merely a week after he had written an op-ed warning of the dangers of drunk driving during the holidays.
I want to urge all TPM readers, regardless of their religious beliefs, not to gorge themselves on rich foods and snacks over the holidays. Do not indulge in Thai food, stay away from the deadly pizza, the alluring meringues, avoid multitudes of cookies, and worst of all candy. These things are indecent and another step on the slippery slope to hell - and weight gain.
The 5 pounds I gained since November are because I’ve added that much smartness to my brain.
This is why I believe the human race is devolving. Politician makes statement on how bad driving and drinking is, and then goes out and drives after drinking, within days. He wasn’t the first, and he won’t be the last.
He was warning the kind of people who drink 40s and drive their hoopties, not those who have 3 or 4 martinis at the club and drive their state-owned SUVs.
And what kind of politician gets a state-owned car?
Compared to any other food, pizza is just magically fattening for me. It’s like the equivalent of a shellfish allergy; if you walk past me with a pizza I’ll keel over and fall to the floor four pounds fatter.
Oh and hey listen drunken NY Republican dude: Driving into a ditch is pretty much a proof that you weren’t “OK to drive” when you left the party. It draws attention to you right when you don’t want that. But thanks for being the poster child for hypocritical jackassery and thanks as well for not killing anyone.
Rule #1 in dealing with Republicans: If they are accusing someone of bad behavior they themselves are neck deep in that very behavior. Time and time again this rule proves true!
Projection is just another variation on Rule #1. Here Donald projects his own insecurities in his negotiating skills (How many businesses did he kill?) onto Obama.
Well, yes, often, but this is different than simple hypocrisy. Alcohol impairs judgment, making it tough to drive a car, but also tough to judge whether one should get in their car. Politicians of all parties advocate safe behavior behind the wheel, and politicians of all parties make bad decisions. Now he has a chance to use the situation as a teachable moment and say “I screwed up bad, here’s what I should have done.”
I think his suggestion in his op-ed of “download[ing] and us[ing] the Stop DWI ‘Have a Plan’ app” is kind of ridiculous. Nobody is going to consult an app that will just tell them to have a plan. Personally I think the best strategy, which he could communicate to the public, is to take a Lyft or get a ride to the party. If you don’t have a car you can’t drive drunk. Make good decisions while you are best able to make good decisions. (Full disclosure, I’m not as good at using this strategy as I’d like, but I’ve found it most effective.)
But he shouldn’t run from this, he should use it to show that no matter how good your intentions are, you could be the next one to run into a ditch, or worse.
