NPR Forced To Apologize For Not Letting James Comer Be An Assignment Editor

The CEOs of NPR and PBS were dragged before Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) DOGE subcommittee on Wednesday for a hearing that mostly served as an opportunity for House Republicans on the panel to gloat about how badly they hope to defund public media organizations. Trump opened the floodgates with his recent executive action attempting to…

They evidently don’t know Musk’s nickname.

It’s reached a point where no normal human could pass miscreants like Comer in a hallway without slapping them; they are that bad.

“The video of the arrest, which shows unidentified men in masks and sweatshirts grabbing Ozturk off the street,”

And if (when) masked men try to grab someone with 2A rights? And lawfully carrying a firearm on their person?

Fun and games ensue? With flying lead?

There is some indication that ICE has contracted these kidnappings to goons. Is Eric Prince’s fingerprints on any of this?

So “Warrants, we don’t need no stinking warrants!”?

Maybe not yet but they doubtless will be; e.g., ‘Maga since forever’: mercenary mogul Erik Prince pushes to privatize Trump deportation plans | US immigration | The Guardian

ETA: What’s the lovely German expression? Ah, “Backpfeifengesicht,” not just a face slap but a face that asks to be punched, a cheek in need of an open palm briskly applied; a face that just looking at it makes you really want to give it a whack. Honestly at this point, that would describe just about every Trumpist mug I’m aware of, male and female alike, including that of the man himself.

I’m going off the topic of NPR to mention bits and pieces of conversations I hear around our over-55 retirement community. We have singles and married couples frightened to death that they might lose SS. We’re talking about instant destitution. Even folks who have some small pension from some job, they still rely heavily on SS and Medicare to survive and have some nominal comfort in their retirement. We’re not talking about cruises and world travel – just day to day survival.
I mentioned a parallel in another TPM forum: That is the deliberate famines of Mao and Stalin. They unconcernedly caused the deaths of millions of innocents as you and I might kill some mice in our garage. Musk and his whiz kids trying to kill old people? No, they’re just blithely and even gleefully beginning the destruction of SS that would condemn 73 million to instant destitution. Some poet said: “Boys throw stones at frogs in fun, but the frogs are dying in earnest”.
What trump voters could have imagined what they have wrought? It triggers the queasiness one feels when reading about some monstrous crime.

Back on topic: GOP and rightists have been gunning for NPR for decades.

Why does NPR never have to apologize to me when I alert them to the (actual) failings in their reporting?

I stopped listening to NPR after the 2016 election because I was sick of the bothsidesing. I think it’s funny it’s been painted as some wild lefty outlet.

I wonder if Prince benefits financially with each prisoner in El Salvador.

Why should we think that they will not arrest American citizens without warrants and expatriate them to a private prison in the jungles of Central America?

how badly they hope to defund public media organizations

This is an extension of the Republican foreign policy. The result will be the same – NPR and PBS will be free to do whatever they want. They won’t be beholden to politicians.

Dumb move, Republicans.

NPR has long been beholden to big $ donors like the Walton family, largely due to federal funding cuts Republicans enacted quite some time ago. And still Republicans can’t shut up with the attacks on NPR. I guess even marginally intelligent news coverage is too much for them to tolerate.

Ozturk was one of four students who wrote an op-ed in March 2024 in their student newspaper, the Tufts Daily, where they called on Tufts leadership to take up a series of resolutions that were passed by the student government at the time. The resolutions included a call to “acknowledge the Palestinian genocide” and “divest from companies with direct or indirect ties to Israel.”

Pretty clear that all the editorial staff of the student newspaper, and all those who voted in the student government election at the time, are equally culpable. And actually since Tufts occupies some prime real estate at the top of a hill, once all the students are deported, it could be turned into a government-funded Starlink research hub!

The Stasi, short for “Staatssicherheit” (State Security), was the official state security service and secret police of East Germany (German Democratic Republic, or GDR) from 1950 to 1990.

I posted this in the MM thread, but I think we may all be seeing different versions of NPR depending on whether we’re in Red or Blue states, or in urban or rural markets. My local NPR station is KUOW in Seattle, and it comes across to me as either neutral or even tilting progressive in the stories it chooses to run.

From that experience, I’ve never understood the rants here against NPR. But maybe I’m seeing a different version?

Waitaminute. “Marj Taylor Greene’s committee”? So it’s got a “D E I” chair"man"? Why haven’t all the good Republicans rebelled??

Also, in covering the horrible, dreadful “Hunter Biden laptop” pseudo scandal, yes. PBS and NPR should have been on it from Day One. And they should have said:

Republican operatives, including Steve Bannon and (sadly) former New York City Mayor Rudolph Guiliani, have been peddling around a computer file which they claim is a disk image or backup of a laptop formerly owned by Hunter Biden, only surviving son of President Joe Biden. Supposedly, they got the backup file from a computer repairman who, although blind, said he noticed what he claimed was “incriminating material” on the alleged laptop, and he was eager to sell a copy to anyone who was a political enemy of the President. The veracity of this material is in question.
