North Carolina GOP Uses Waning Supermajority To Strip Power From Newly Elected State Dems

The North Carolina Republican-controlled legislature is attempting to pass a sweeping bill — a power grab tucked inside a hurricane relief bill — in a blatant attempt to shift power away from newly elected statewide Democrats just weeks before Republicans lose their supermajority in the state General Assembly.  The legislation, SB 382, was fast-tracked this…

I hope the courts don’t allow this. I used to know what they would do, but all bets are off with our current SCOTUS.

I’m guessing it would be the state Supremes, and would have to depend on the state’s constitution? One of the current Dems on that court is in a tight battle to hold the seat. So scary & frustrating.

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has ten days to sign the legislation into law, but he is, of course, expected to veto the measure.

Time for NC Dems to show their mettle. Spend the next ten days planning every legislative delay tactic they can muster. Then, when Cooper vetoes it on the 10th day, unload it all in the month of December to run out the clock. Even if you don’t succeed, showing Dems fighting till the bitter end will boost morale.

I have the displeasure and misfortunate to reside in the Shithole State of North Carolina. The Maggot Dixiepub Party has basically wreaked havoc with North Carolina since they managed to squeak into the majority of the General Disassembly. That North Carolina is actually pretty much a purple, evenly split state gets lost in the antics of the Maggot Dixiepubs ensuring that they stay in power and Only The Right Sort Of People Get To Vote. They are hugely disappointed that their efforts to make the Congressional Districts go 13-1 (2022 election thanks due to the NC Supreme Court, it was 7-7, but then the Maggots got control of the Court and it suddenly decided that as long as the Maggots did it, gerrymandering was Perfectly Fine) didn’t quite pan out and still extremely peeved to no end as to how they could possibly lost their supermajority in the House of Misrepresentation.

We are pulling pitch after the first of the year and truly regret that we ever decided to move here.

Impossible to even comprehend how damage the Maggot Dixiepubs have done to North Carolina, which is now just as much a Shithole as the others in the New Confederacy.

News Flash: The NC Democrats have been fighting like hell for years now and more than a few are Very Seriously Pissed. Morale is not the problem, the problem is a corrupt, autocratic government.

The big surprise is the recent bill doing what they have to the incoming Democrats elected to the Council of State is that they will allow the new governor to actually live in the Governor’s Mansion – although they might charge him rent, of course in another of their secret pieces of legislation.

“But the Republican-controlled legislature will have its supermajority until December 31, meaning they will have time to override any Cooper veto before the end of the year.”

Honest question: Couldn’t he veto at 11:59:30 on December 31? Shenanigans deserve countershenanigans.

In many states, the bill would become law if the governor did not veto it within a certain time frame. This is likely the case in No. Carolina.

Such ‘patriots’ and ‘lovers of the Constitution’. Frauds. Complete and utter power hungry frauds.

Time for the NC Democratic legislators to go on an extended Christmas vacation to Vermont.

wouldn’t work in this case. Rs currently have a supermajority, until the next session starts.

and quorum is only 50% +1

This is Republican Rule #2 in action; “If you can’t win fairly , cheat.”

Republican Rule #1 is “When the truth just won’t do, lie.”

The Wisconsin GOP used the Lame Duck session to pull the same filthy trick in 2018 when unpopular governor Scott Walker lost and then signed laws stripping significant powers from his successor Democrat Tony Evers. Turned out the voters didn’t like the GOP cheating. First the voters flipped the Wi Supreme Court. The court then voided the GOP extreme Gerrymander which led to GOP losing there big margins in the Legislature. The WISDems are on course to win both houses in 2026. The arrogant NC GOP cheated and may soon be defeated.

Seems like a violation of voters’ Due Process and/or Equal Protection rights to substantially alter the authority of an elected office after the election for that office has occurred. It’s no longer the office they voted for.

Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, been there, done that.

Didn’t have to strip it from the Secretary of State, they did that years ago. However the Election Commissions (2 of them) haven’t done what they wanted. They were actually fair sometimes!

They lost out on gerrymandering for a super–majority in both houses thanks to Judge Janet’s election and new maps. So they tried two constitutional amendments on an off-year primary election ballot. And failed resoundingly.

Unfortunately, the ignorant voters of NC have given our State Supreme Court a Rightwing Majority. And we know going to SCOTUS is futile.

And MAGA voters will never figure that out.
