Just as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) managed to keep the government open by following the Kevin McCarthy playbook, so too will the party’s right flank not veer from its McCarthy-era (no, the other McCarthy era) retaliatory tactics.
House Republicans’ repeated attestations that next time Johnson blocks their hijacking there will be blood
I liked this scene more when Hans Gruber shot Ellis.
This whole Speaker dance is just kabuki for the “real” negotiation next time.
Organized Money has been forced to abandon its age-old trick of taking the economy hostage: there is rock-solid evidence that the public always overwhelmingly holds the GOP responsible when they shoot the hostage, and this year Biden even managed to talk the hostage-takers down in broad daylight (adding one more notch his grievously tattered belt).
So the ploy won’t work again. But you still want to dictate extremely unpopular and savagely harmful policy, and you’re still a minority, so what do you do?
What every Hollywood movie about hostage-taking did when they wanted to revive the genre: start the next heist with a surprising execution to prove you really mean business this time. Of course, choose for your victim some minor character who doesn’t have a big role to play in the movie. Not a hard decision for a sock-puppeteer to toss one sock: not emotional, and not a practical problem since grievance shamans are a dime a dozen.
“He’s got to find an opportunity to change the dynamics,” Bishop told Politico. “If he can’t, he’s going to follow the same path of not just the immediately previous speaker but a series of them who have not really proved successful.”
Maybe it’s the Republican Caucus that’s not proving successful instead of the Speaker. I mean, Nancy worked just fine with the Democratic Caucus, and she was VERY successful, as i’m sure Republicans would agree.
It’s long past time for the non-freedom caucus GOP reps to shut this crap down. Unfortunately, it appears there really aren’t enough “traditional Republicans” to bring these unruly children to heel. So, keep it up, y’all and let the chips fall where they may. Perhaps, just maybe there’s a smidgen of an outside chance that actual voters will toss 'em all and enable the Dems to lead from the front, rather than just mitigating all the damage these @-holes wreak.
