Newsweek Editors Finally Apologize Under Pressure For Racist Birther Op-Ed About Kamala Harris | Talking Points Memo

Regarding Kamala’s Eligibility for Executive Office…

  1. Ms. Harris is a Senator until she leaves that office.

  2. When Joe Biden becomes President, he will designate Ms. Harris as Vice President. At that point, the Constitution and all laws are irrelevant, because President Biden can do anything.

As Trump and BillBarr know.

Cooper and Hammer still have jobs in journalism? That apology isn’t good enough. Editors should know better.

Why absolutely nobody sane, that’s who.

I’m sick and tired of people who are either too stupid to read and understand the Fourteenth Amendment, sec. 1, OR who willfully misinterpret it to suit their political agenda.

The first sentence of section 1 of the 14th Amendment is very very clear. So clear in fact, Mr. Eastman and you editors of Newsweek, that any graduate of law school, let alone any 5 year old could tell you that if someone is born in the United States they are a citizen. To say othewise dishonors your law degree, Mr Eastman and you editors of Newsweek need to learn what an actual apology is. It is not drivel and word salad.

Which is exactly why this “story” was written. Same reason Barr jumped the gun with his presser on the Mueller report, and why he’ll do it for Durham — to get it out there. Facts and truth don’t matter.

Trump continues to push the racist birther conspiracy about Kamala Harris. He just refused to say that Kamala Harris is eligible (she is) and he praised the racist, debunked Newsweek column. Kamala Harris was born in California. She is eligible. It is racist to say otherwise.

Laughable, yes. It’s not direct birtherism, it’s the “anchor baby” complaint from those who believe that birthright citizenship shouldn’t be legal, and at least one parent should be a US citizen even for kids born here. It’s just as bad as directly claiming that she wasn’t born here.

There is a small but vocal contingent of hardcore anti-immigration R’s who have a fetish about anchor babies. They’re going to use Harris as the poster child to advance their agenda at every opportunity. It’s impossible that the Newsweek execs didn’t know this was an undercurrent in politics.

This is my favorite part of this. IF you didn’t, you should have and you’re really stupid.

Newsweek: “We’re sorry that we’re a tool.”

The Trump campaign announces that, hours before Biden delivers his convention acceptance speech on Thursday, Trump will be giving a speech attacking Biden just outside Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Is Trump certain he wants to serve himself up for comparison?
