Newsweek editor-in-chief Nancy Cooper and opinion editor Josh Hammer have apologized after first publishing — and later defending — an op-ed that advanced a racist conspiracy theory that has been weaponized by the Trump campaign as a tactic to sow doubt about the eligibility of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) for vice presidency.
What with Eastman, Tom Cotton, Hugh Hewitt and the other movement conservative execrables, one could be led to believe that these news outlets are stupid enough to believe that these people are arguing in good faith.
It’s not a marketplace of ideas, it’s a tag sale of bullshit.
Trump in Bedminster talking the same old bullshit, including about the postal service. DeJoy is a brilliant businessman and a nice guy by the way and this mail-in “universal” thing is horrible and the Democrats want money for that and Trump wants money to go to people and the Democrats want money to go to states that have been run very badly and if we’re asked we’ll go in and straighten it out in one hour yadda yadda yadda…
Now DeJoy wants to make the post office great again? Get it?
Jesus the bullshit about mail-in voting. WILL SOMEONE PUSH BACK PLEASE
“[T]o many readers, the essay inevitably conveyed the ugly message that Senator Kamala Harris, a woman of color and the child of immigrants, was somehow not truly American.”
is the updated trumPP era version of “If anyone was offended. . .” also demonstrating they don’t know that this country is heading very quickly towards a non-white majority population.
Without retracting the piece, the editors offered an apology in a note attached to the racist birther column, which is still live acknowledging regret that the op-ed was “being used by some as a tool to perpetuate racism and xenophobia.”
It was found during the study of rumor and urban legend that printed material showing the falsity of a rumor can – counterintuitively – give it more currency. That’s why this apology is useless. The damage is done.
Best is surrogates, when asked about this, say something like, “Kamala was born in Oakland, CA. That makes her a native-born citizen” . Then, if some member of our “press corps” wants further explication, say, “Did you hear what I just said?”
