Newsweek Editors Finally Apologize Under Pressure For Racist Birther Op-Ed About Kamala Harris | Talking Points Memo

Newsweek editor-in-chief Nancy Cooper and opinion editor Josh Hammer have apologized after first publishing — and later defending — an op-ed that advanced a racist conspiracy theory that has been weaponized by the Trump campaign as a tactic to sow doubt about the eligibility of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) for vice presidency.

I just found out that Newsweek is owned by an outre Korean religious group.

The editors ‘apologia’ reads really irritating to me. We never meant THAT to happen. Screw you, both of you. Go back to Tucker Carlson, jerk.

Well, that’s a very clear non-apology apology:

“We entirely failed to anticipate the ways in which the essay would be interpreted, distorted and weaponized.”

Also, on Twitter Nancy Cooper still has as her pinned tweet her initial defense of the piece:

Stephen Miller still hasn’t proven he isn’t Putin’s illegitimate son. Vladimir treats Jared like he definitely is.

What with Eastman, Tom Cotton, Hugh Hewitt and the other movement conservative execrables, one could be led to believe that these news outlets are stupid enough to believe that these people are arguing in good faith.

It’s not a marketplace of ideas, it’s a tag sale of bullshit.

Disingenuous statement of the month. How could anyone with half a brain possibly have failed to anticipate this?

They deeply regret that the totally false opinion piece they featured is being used the way that they intended when they solicited it.

Trump in Bedminster talking the same old bullshit, including about the postal service. DeJoy is a brilliant businessman and a nice guy by the way and this mail-in “universal” thing is horrible and the Democrats want money for that and Trump wants money to go to people and the Democrats want money to go to states that have been run very badly and if we’re asked we’ll go in and straighten it out in one hour yadda yadda yadda…

Now DeJoy wants to make the post office great again? Get it?

Jesus the bullshit about mail-in voting. WILL SOMEONE PUSH BACK PLEASE

“[T]o many readers, the essay inevitably conveyed the ugly message that Senator Kamala Harris, a woman of color and the child of immigrants, was somehow not truly American.”

is the updated trumPP era version of “If anyone was offended. . .” also demonstrating they don’t know that this country is heading very quickly towards a non-white majority population.

“We entirely failed to anticipate the ways in which the essay would be interpreted, distorted and weaponized.”

Every time someone tells an obviously bad faith public lie, a devil gets his pitchfork.

Without retracting the piece, the editors offered an apology in a note attached to the racist birther column, which is still live acknowledging regret that the op-ed was “being used by some as a tool to perpetuate racism and xenophobia.”

Now the reporters are pushing back. Trump claims the Democrats won’t approve money for the post office.

Not like it’s your job to know a single damn thing about the media and political environment we live in.

“We entirely failed to anticipate that the cow would wander out of the open barn door. I’m sure it will find its way back.”

It was found during the study of rumor and urban legend that printed material showing the falsity of a rumor can – counterintuitively – give it more currency. That’s why this apology is useless. The damage is done.
Best is surrogates, when asked about this, say something like, “Kamala was born in Oakland, CA. That makes her a native-born citizen” . Then, if some member of our “press corps” wants further explication, say, “Did you hear what I just said?”

Democrats have been trying to get money to the Postal Service since May, if not earlier.
