This is political theater. I don’t mean that cynically. I mean it… in a rather more sinister way. The jury isn’t the Senators. No one, and I mean no one, (other than a certain ex-President), gives a damn how they vote, or even if they vote. But the people at home watching this… they need to see this, and they need to be reminded of this in November of 2022. We have a mid-term election to win, and a bunch of fascist to drive from public office. That’s what this is really about.

The audience that counts is the public. Impeachment was designed to be a political, not a legal trial, which is why the jury is the Senate, rather than citizens. So they will make a decision based on their perception of their political interests. I think they are dead wrong politically to gamble that Donald Trump will be a net positive when they stand for re-election. Obviously many of them see otherwise, but I think they will come to regret it.

Does anyone suppose the House Managers are ever going to talk about the disarming and deauthorization of the National guard the day prior to the attack? Because to me that seems pretty damned damning. (And, not coincidentally, the then SECDEF should, like so many members of this maladministration, be in jail.)

As horrifying as that footage was and remains this hits much closer to home. On 9/11 we were attacked by a foreign suicide squad. The 1/6 atrocity was perpetrated by our fellow Americans turned terrorists and incited by the sitting POTUS. It’s going to take us generations to fully process this trauma.

The videos were absolutely arresting. On another note, why can’t Trump supporters spell “cavalry” (when they mean to refer to a mounted military unit) and instead use the word “Calvary”? If you are trying to make Trump feel like you have his back when he leads your insurrection, he might feel better if he is assured the cavalry is coming rather than a mount on which Romans crucified people.
