NC GOP Moves To Censure Burr Over Surprise Vote To Convict Trump

Has TPM done a round-up of all these canceling incidents? Do they all just say “Senator X or Congresswoman Y are now censured because because because …” where because is neither a corruption charge nor a moral turpitude accusation?

The Trump phenomenon underscores the utility of the threat of punishment on people possessing authoritarian tendencies

I believe that Ian Fleming (in one of his short stories with Agent 007) had his hero voice the thought:

“Either at your feet or at your throat”

Republican grass roots seem to have entered into a political suicide pact. But they don’t realize that they are isolated because their echo chamber is completely sealed off from reality.

They turned out 74 million voters for Trump and think that’s all that matters, when it inspired 81 million for Biden and another 4 million or so for other non-Trump candidates. And about 5-10 million of those who voted for him would not do so again. Swing voters (which is different from “independents”, BTW) want nothing to do with the R party and they have set up a solid 65/35 wedge split to their disadvantage.

This was inevitable. Just wait until Trump and his insurrectionist mob members face juries in DC, where Trump got 3% of the vote. Now that McConnell has welcomed Trump being prosecuted, Ds are completely off the political hook for putting him on trial.

I was skeptical about pursuing an impeachment that we all knew would result in a second acquittal. I was so wrong. The fiction that the Republican party is just another party in a democracy is now confirmed beyond any last doubt. Let them censure their moderates. Let us work with those moderates on specific legislation, while realizing that bipartisanship ends there, and that our stance toward the rest must be war, in defense of country. The 43 seditionists must be deprived of the filbuster and of the gerrymander. Hr1 and the John Lewis VRA must become law. David Frum and many other former Republicans agree–we need to take and use this bipartisan mandate to deprive the seditionists of the tools that unduly inflate their power.

Thanks for mentioning that…many people pulled the lever for Trump in 2020 because they were fed pro-style messaging targeted to specific audiences with deep fears which had nothing to do with loving Donald Trump.

They ain’t the Guy in the Moose Hat squatting in Congressional Chambers on 6 January 2021.

Censured for a vote against lynching one’s fellow Republican? St Ronnie would be puzzled.
