Nadler Hits Back At WH Response | Talking Points Memo

House Judiciary Committee chair Jerry Nadler (D-NY) didn’t hold back when asked about his thoughts on the formal response to the Senate summons that President Trump’s legal team issued Saturday evening.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1285593

What is the president hiding?” Nadler said. “The President says don’t let these people testify. If they were — if they had exculpatory evidence, he’d be saying let them testify.”

Great point but too obvious for the GOP Senators.

But it’ll make for a good two week soap opera run…:zipper_mouth_face:

SMost thinking folks know what Nadler said is absolutely true - does it make any difference ? Will any R’s vote to impeach?

We aren’t going to win the trial in the Senate or with his cult but we can and will win it in the court of public opinion - with voters and that’s all that matters now.

I’m pretty sure that Nadler said “arrant nonsense,” not “errant nonsense.”

Good catch - thanks.

It all depends on how the MSM reports on the spin after Trump is acquitted. If all we hear is that Trump was found “not guilty,” and “Trump always said he would be found not guilty,” “no collusion,” “perfect call,” then Republicans will spin it as a win and the low-info. voters will be none the wiser.

Agree. He said arrant, as in “total.”

I read plenty more than that in the media myself.

Odds are better if the trial is allowed to be shown on CSPAN but that’s looking unlikely. Coverage is one thing…live broadcast another beast entirely. It would seem to be what the current occupant wants given his made for TV defense team but still… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

“Both of those statements are errant nonsense,” Nadler said…

“… from nattering nabobs of negativism.”

He totally did.

Fidelity to a political party morphed into blind cultish behavior a long time ago for the Repubs.

I wish it was going to be shown too but it will reported on. And the media isn’t happy about being shut out.

This is the point I was trying to make on the other threat. When even Nadler, who is someone I think of being very judicious in his choice of words, is calling it “errant nonsense” and aggressively taking the offensive, it sure seems like Dems are rising to the challenge and they’re taking no prisoners.

"Any jury would convict in three minutes flat…”

Any impartial jury.

Unfortunately, we’re stuck with 46 Dems and 54 extras from “Beavis And Butthead Do Jonestown”.

It will be a real spectacle to see Republican Senators contort themselves over their “not guilty” stance now that we know that the trial will be televised.

OT, but: Now that the cult of Trump has supplanted the cult of Reagan, maybe Trump can get a few prisons, maybe some landfills, named for him.

It’s all a bit strange. Why did Trump go out and get TV lawyers, imported directly from Fox News…if it’s not going to be on TV? Seems to me Trump and McConnell aren’t on the same page.

Tena, I think you are on to the main point. R’s can swindle an acquittal in the Senate, while Democrats demonstrate both the criminality of Trump and the corruption of his party (and, yes, it is now his). And, as well, the Democrats can show a sense of integrity and loyalty to the constitution that the R’s clearly lack.

It’s a pretty stark comparison…the House team sent in a document of 100 pages, with a big index of attachments, footnoted, all laid out like a proper trial document for indictment. The Trump team sent in a six page letter that essentially admitted to article 2 (they state Trump blocked all testimony for reasons) and also admits that he did hold the Ukrainian aid up, which the GAO just said broke the law. In any reasonable court in the US, this would have been laughed out of the room…I was foreperson on a jury in 2018 and it reminds me of the bumbling lawyers for the defense in that case (who were obviously not experienced trial lawyers). Instead, we have a “court” that has already decided the verdict and we’re just waiting to see how they pull off their show trial.

I’m hoping that the nation sees enough of the trial to realize how much of a farce it is on the Republican side, and how unfair the verdict ends up being, and then votes accordingly in November.
