NAACP Prez: Manchin ‘Conflicted’ On Voting Rights Bill Due To Allegiance To Archaic Senate Rules | Talking Points Memo

Following Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) meeting with civil right leaders on Tuesday morning, NAACP President Derrick Johnson said he believes that the centrist senator is “conflicted” about the sweeping voting rights bill that he declared his opposition to because of his commitment to preserving the filibuster.

Johnson neglected to tell the reporter that the session with Manchin ended with the participants telling Manchin that they “blessed his heart”.

“Quite frankly, he’s conflicted. He understands the need to protect the right to vote, but he is committed to the procedural rules of the Senate out of concern that if they are eroded today on one side of the aisle, they’ll be used against the other side of the aisle in the future,”

Dos) Manchin doesn’t trust the voters.

Johnson said. “Now is the opportunity to figure out: how do we overcome that conflict?”`

This photo cracked me up. Caption might as well be, “Entire Democratic Party reacts to Joe Manchin”:

Yes, I took a brief respite from sobbing quietly in the background to laugh at this, too.

Just to be clear, that’s not meant to be a snarky slam. You take humor where you can find it these days.

Donald Trump is the king of blackmail. His closest partner is Putin, who is also a king of blackmail. Many Republican Senators are still very clearly loyal to a man who recently tried to get them all killed.

It seems there is plenty of good reason to suspect that, on top of the intractable oligarchy-vs-democracy problems we normally face, multiple Democratic Senators are likely being targeted for blackmail and other illegal pressure schemes.

Or do we all think that the party of organized corruption, which seized power through financial and legal corruption, the party that is the spearhead for an invasion of the public sector by stooges for organized corruption, is suddenly going to put away one of the most powerful tools in existence, and especially after the leader of their party just amassed probably the biggest stockpile of blackmail material ever created?

Is conflicted code for “I already cashed the checks.” ?

Of course, the irony that identifies as a kick in the crotch here is that the filibuster stopped being a tool for bipartisanship as soon as republicans weaponized it, so the only way to make it actually encourage bipartisanship now would be to ditch it and say, “We’ll vote to bring it back when you assholes stop being assholes.” So, probably not for a long time, but that would be up to the assholes.

Joe, Joe, Joe, how many people have to be denied the vote, or to be made to stand in lines for hours? How many of the new state voting laws were passed on a straight party line?

Yes, and how many years must a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
And how many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn’t see?

This idealist is going to get us straight into fascism, and him into hell on earth if he keeps this up.

He seems to be unable to grasp the concept that if the Republicans were in this situation, the filibuster would have been toast the first day of the session.

Every single one of the state restrictions this legislation would undo were passed on party-line votes.

Under Manchin’s logic, these shouldn’t have passed since they weren’t ‘bipartisan’, either.

It’s almost as if…oh, I don’t know…he’s lying through his teeth about why he opposes this bill.

Meanwhile, in other turncoat news…

Meanwhile, a relative newbie to the Senate club — moderate Sen. KYRSTEN SINEMA (D-Ariz.) — may have found her own clique … among Republicans. She was spotted at Charlie Palmer two weeks ago having dinner with Sens. SHELLEY MOORE CAPITO (R-W.Va.), DEB FISCHER (R-Neb.) and CYNTHIA LUMMIS (R-Wyo.).

Either that or he’s dumber than Dubya.

C’mon, man, cut the malarkey. Recently, Dubya has been more like Einstein, Gandhi, and Steve Jobs, rolled into one, compared to the rest of the GQP.

I’ve long contended that Obama and Dubya colluded to elect Trump.

Obama so that he’d be eternally revered as an almost-deity,

Dubya so that he’d no longer be the dumbest president in history.
