Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) came out in support of the House-passed Jan. 6 commission bill investigating the attack on the Capitol, joining Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) as the second Republican senator to back the bill.
Murkowski and Romney are low hanging fruit.
Nine more are needed, including Collins; because, she’s a snake. What she says means nothing until after the votes are counted.
It’s always the cover up that gets you, and Republicans that look like they are trying to cover up for the events of 1/6 are going to end up regretting it. How can you defend multiple investigations of Benghazi (meant mostly to damage Hillary Clinton) and turn your back on an event that, if it had gone the wrong way, could have lead to dead members of Congress? This is going to resonate with people who care about this stuff in 2022, especially after the court cases for the insurrectionists proceed and the DoJ continues its investigation into conspiracy and sedition.
The key is the preconditions Republicans insist on to pass this bill. I’d rather have it fail, and Democrats appoint a commission on their own, than have one that artificially limits the investigation in any way.
I think they’re starting to understand that a commission with subpoena power would be much, much, much worse for them. Hopefully, the other Guardians Of Plunderers cuck-us are too stupid to understand.
If I had my druthers Pelosi would establish a commission and then bury them in subpoenas, beginning with tourism expert Rep. Andrew “I’ll help bar the door but then lie about it)” Clyde.
I would expect all seven of the Republicans who voted to convict Trump will vote in favor of this commission. The question is, can they find three more Republicans to at least end the filibuster on this? They don’t even need to support it in the end, only allow a formal vote on the Senate floor.
It’s quite possible that there are at least ten Republican Senators who really want this commission, but would rather not come out publicly in support of it.
Notice how long it took them to announce this? As the Republican’s designated “moderates” they were waiting to see if a vote on “principle” might actually have an effect. Once McConnell assured them it would not, they knew they could safely dissent. I expect Susan Collins will get “courageous” any day now.
