Except of course he didn’t actually apologize for what he has been accused of: objectifying women and purposely undermining them for years(see Laura Basset’s article excerpted here):
" The Cut obtained footage of him joking in early 2016, just before a live interview with then candidate Clinton, “where’s that Bill Cosby pill,” referring to the date-rape drug. In 2005, he openly wondered whether the troops would “take the orders” from a female president; after another interview, he pinched Clinton’s cheek; and in another, he suggested that she had only had so much political success because her husband had “messed around.” This evening anchor, in addition to everything else, has repeatedly challenged whether women are legitimate politicians or could be president at all."
“Matthews’s whole modus operandi seems to be inviting smart women onto his show, flirting with them or otherwise making them uncomfortable before or while the camera rolls, asking them a question on air and then immediately interrupting them to tell them why they’re wrong. He repeated this playbook with Warren this week.”
She finishes it off with the real reason why Matthews doesn’t deserve a whit of credit for disingenuously apologizing for “complimenting” women rather than the ugly reality of his influence and behaviour:
“Having a news anchor who calls women “she-devil” and treats their assessments with infantilizing suspicion while conducting post-debate interviews builds in a major disadvantage for female candidates.”
Indeed.
Something many of us fantasize about.
Kudos to him for having the financial stability and awareness of living life to fullest after conquering fear of cancer to just say FU out loud.
John Oliver did a mashup of Matthews gaffes the other night. I was left wondering if Matthews has suffered from a bit of mental deterioration from some cause or another that isn’t being discussed. I’ve not been a fan of his and, regardless of cause, am not sorry to see him retire.
It’s sad that Matthews’ career ended this way, but he has nobody to blame but himself. Maybe his bosses too for not holding him accountable for his behavior long ago. But apparently this is the corporate culture at NBC - let powerful men do whatever they want, cover it up, ignore it, tolerate it, silence people who complain, until it gets called out publicly and people end up leaving in disgrace. There is something toxic in that organization they need to fix.
Kornacki is a political reporter-- I think a good one, but he’s not a data guy. If you are uninterested in data, then he’s entertaining enough. His knowledge of the importance of various districts or localities is great. If you are a data person then you just grit your teeth watching him try to do addition on his calculator (or worse in his head) faster than the excel spreadsheet the producer is looking at that auto-updates when the results come in. Takes forever.
Equating Longevity with Stature. He was the very definition of a modern both-sides, CW-spewing Beltway hack.
(Someone who knows Gilbert & Sullivan better than me should give this the proper Modern Major-General treatment)
Wasn’t he also the guy who said Palin gave him the tingle up his leg? Don’t know how over the top inappropriate his misogynistic comments were but his entire schtick on air was as an overbearing dominator rather than an interviewer and for that alone he needed to take a hike. And on the other hand there is Todd who just acts like a needy puppy rescued from the pound as his schtick. Gotta be a middle ground there somewhere MSNBC. Hope ya all get a chance to read Greg Sergeant’s column at WaPo today. He’s calling out the Todd’s of the MSM to get with the program and stop with the normalization of the dotard’s behavior. The man is a sick son of a bitch and that needs to be pointed out in every piece done on him.
If this was MSNBC’s way of testing to see if he’s ready for an anchor role, where they have to be ready at a moment’s notice for breaking news coverage, his bumbling, stunned, deer-in-a-headlight, tone-deaf performance demonstrated he’s not ready.
He’s annoying enough at the boards on election night going over results.
