MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Grills Warren About Bloomberg’s Harassment Problem

No. It’s much more calculated than that. She wants to accuse him of lying without actually saying the phrase “he’s lying”. If she says it so bluntly, it would be the big headline for her for the next few days and she doesn’t want that. “Warren Calls Bloomberg a Liar” is good click bate, but “Warren Agrees with Woman” isn’t. It would be a distraction and it could also make her look overly harsh to some people. Matthews knows exactly what she was doing and chose to tool her around for it.

Tweety Bird (Matthews) is far over his “use-by” date … he’s really becoming a continual embarrassment. It would be nice if he retired OR if NBC grew the cajones and fired him … but as long as Chuckles Todd in Political News Director for NBC, I don’t see that happening either … SMH

And you can tell Matthews was not ready for that because he just sits in stunned silence for a bit. He really is a putz. Then again, a lot of male pundits today have shown completely stupid takes, so par for the course

I don’t know why you’re telling me this?

Having women in your life doesn’t mean a person can’t have prejudices, especially growing up in a patriarchal culture.

I have biases against women. Everyone does. That’s why it’s insidious. That’s how patriarchy and white supremacy and elitism work!

But more importantly, I didn’t accuse you of anything. I asked you to think about how you perceive things. I do this constantly for myself to challenge my own biases and preconceptions.

Sure. I don’t disagree with this.

I would add tho that stereotypes and bigotry based on things people cannot control or change are worse than categories a person can choose for themselves (like a job).

Dismissal and denigration are much much worse if it’s toward someone who is weak or less powerful. Bloomberg I’m sure didn’t give his “kill it” comment a second thought after it came out of his mouth, but for that woman it was huge.

My point was that we care more about some people’s feelings than others. And that this thread reflects that. You got one very apologetic “ok boomer” comment here. But there are at least 10 commenters here blaming Warren and not believing the victim.

A bunch of sites are awash with people mad at Warren for being “out of control”, “obsessed”, “unpresidential”, “embarrassing.” Her approval went down after the debate, and a bunch of people are acting like they don’t understand why. Well you can go and look at what those people say themselves. They don’t believe women.

I don’t think anything I’ve said is hostile or controversial. The world isn’t going to get better until each of us tries harder to examine our own thoughts and behaviors.

If you counted me as the ‘apologetic’ “ok boomer” comment, I just wanna clarify: I’m not. I’m sympathetic… but as I said, I think how it’s being used matters. If it’s just ‘you’re old’, that’s bad. If it’s being used (as the meme generally is) to mean ‘you really need to let go of your entitlement borne of being the dominant social caste all your life and having everything your way, and stop insisting things need to be how they were when you were young’? That’s legit.

And, you know, it’s a lot easier to type ‘ok boomer’ than all that.

Besides, I totally agree w/Warren on this, so I dunno how apologetic I’d be toward her. I’d be more ‘KICK CHRIS MATTHEWS RIGHT SQUARE IN THE DICK, LIZ!’. :smirk:

Sorry, I didn’t mean to misconstrue. I used the wrong word. You’re right.

Additional rambling unoriginal thoughts:

I only meant to say that you were very careful to account for some people’s feelings about the meme. On the other hand, in discussions on liberal sites, serious harm towards women is usually treated with a shrug or contempt. We generally have to explain and beg to not be mocked even further (e.g. me, this site, yesterday). A couple of commenters may speak up gingerly in support.

For decades, protests and attempts to shame abusive or threatening speech (e.g. Milo doxing trans person) have been met with wall to wall whinging in mainstream press about free speech, PC police, woke firing squads, rising youth fascism, end of the liberal order. Yet “ok boomer” is a verboten pejorative?

Saying something questionably mean to someone is not illegal. Discrimination and harassment in the workplace very much are! The latter means you were victimized, not the former. You wouldn’t know that listening to so many liberal men and women.

It comes down to power dynamics obviously. I’m fairly certain you’ve already read plenty of Rebecca Traister. Her article on Matthews / Warren for reference: https://www.thecut.com/2020/02/chris-matthews-elizabeth-warren-believe-women.html#_ga=2.268695161.983781175.1582773073-1810254025.1582554303

When you said you “had never heard of Warren until she decided to run for office,” it could have meant you hadn’t heard of her before she ran for the Senate seat (and won it).

Anyhow, thanks for clarifying.

I would say Nancy Pelosi.

I think the objection is to the stereotype.

Thanks: a great example!

I agree that what we see of her at the podium is what she wants us to see.

Very much so – and the image is not of one who bows to anyone else’s expectations.

I’m not sure others would agree that she is simply allowed to be who she is. Even right here on these pages, you and I have both seen hundreds of comments complaining about how she is treated (in the media, by anonymous Internet commenters, and so on). Frequently (if not always), these comments focus on how she is treated as a woman.

True. But she persists.

Sure, but it’s not used in a stereotyping way, it’s used in response to someone exhibiting that behavior.

Calling a black guy a criminal when he’s walking down the street? Stereotyping racist bullshit.

Calling a black guy a criminal when he’s walking down the street with your TV? Not so much.

What about these?

  • Calling X a member of a criminal race when he’s walking down the street with your TV?

  • Calling X a member of a criminal generation when he’s walking down the street with your TV?
