A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things.
The For the People Act was brought to a vote in the Senate last night, and Republicans blocked it through the filibuster, as expected. Democrats, who held together, keeping in play a potential move to blow up the filibuster down the road, are trying to encourage voting rights advocates to keep the faith.
Weâll get them next time! Just you watch, our time is coming! We have a plan!! Itâs gonna work, just you wait! A committee is looking at options now. Venn diagrams and everything!! And packets!! Lots of packets! Itâs going to be glorious!!
There are several optionsâŚeradicate entirely, do a carve-out for special occasions, lower the 60 to another number (55 has been mentioned), make the term Filibuster a verb so that the minority has to make a (usually marathon) case to the Chambers.
And a couple more options.
Failure to pass this legislation would be catastrophic, according to David Plouffe. The GOP is no longer an âopposition partyâ, it is a fascist cult.
I would like to hear the Dems throw McConnellâs solution in search of a problem back in his face. Constantly. You know, all the gop state legislation being pushed to protect against non-existent voting fraud is the âsolution in search of a problemâ but really a solution to the GOPâs problem, theyâre un-American racists.
We need to start with the term âfilibusterâ. It started out actually BEING a filibuster. Remember Jimmy Stewart plugging with the boy scouts? It is now a single person filing a paper. And the he goes back to his office. Republicans have always been masters of demonizing words. We need to create a demon-word that says just what this is.
There should be no easy way to completely block debate on a bill. This protects the opposition from having to stand up and say what their problem is and have it answered.
A filibuster should be just that. Stand up and hold the floor. If you have 50 senators objecting, there can be 50 individual senators standing up and talking as long as they can, but only one time. Should be over in about 3 months.
We need to stop news organizations, senators, and anybody from calling todayâs system a âfilibuster.â
Afterthought: if you have some old geezer senator that can only speak an hour or so, tough luck. If you canât filibuster, you shouldnât run for office to be a senator. Part of the job.
I really donât like this headline. Letâs see if they get filibuster reform before we call the Dems âunified.â As of now, it looks like they are anything but unified, with 2 Senators publicly stating, in somewhat different words, that they oppose advancing Bidenâs agenda.
And the debate should be relevant; no reading from the bible, southern cookbooks, or even Go, Dog. Go! Make them work for a living, like the rest of us.
Thatâs a 96 percent level of agreement there. If we were grading it, it would be an A+. What Iâm not sure I like myself is describing that as âanything but unified.â
Lowering it to 55 would still be useless. Covid relief package: zero Repub votes. Jan 6 commission got six Repubs but if the critical number had been 5 you can bet McConnell wouldnât have let that happen. Yesterdayâs vote to debate: zero Repub votes. Lowering it to 55 only means that the minority could still rule, which is antithetical to the way the Constitution was envisioned, where majority rule was intended.
Nope. Just use the republican method - they just use the same term over and over again until the press agrees to use it the way they want them to. Newt Gingrich was the first one to really emphasize a systematic program of defining the terms of any and every discussion.
Itâs crazy. Everyone realizes that calling someone a demeaning nickname is actually hilarious, and if NBC wanted to really get high ratings, they would have created a program that was nothing but TFG calling people names.
