Wonder what the long term impact will be on the population of rural red states, which already had small hospitals closing at unprecedented rates?
Remember it isn’t just the 85,000 Covid patients that are impacted by this high rate. There are only so many hospital beds, nurses and doctors. Your Aunt Ruby might not be able to undergo the procedure she needs to keep her alive in the event of an illness other than Covid. Procedures we call elective are often not all that elective for the long term health of the patient. They can be postponed for a while and scheduled but if they are delayed too long patients will be crippled or killed. If the rates get too high, acute care is impacted. You can’t postpone your trip to the cath lab if you are having a heart attack and shouldn’t postpone it if your doctor believes you need a stent.
One death per minute. 
That is a particular worry. Rural healthcare is iffy at best and rural hospitals are closing everywhere.
The horror to which these selfish assholes have exposed medical personnel is beyond contemptible.
