Missouri Republicans Now Also Poised to Do Trump's Mid-Cycle Redistricting Dirty Work

Originally published at: Missouri Republicans Now Also Poised to Do Trump’s Mid-Cycle Redistricting Dirty Work - TPM – Talking Points Memo

While Missouri Democrats stage protests and push Republican leadership to engage with them, it appears that Republicans in the Missouri state House will ultimately be able to pass redrawn congressional district maps this week, bowing to pressure from the Trump administration. Two weeks ago, Missouri’s Republicans Gov. Mike Kehoe unveiled the new congressional map —…

“…it strongly signals the Supreme Court will not uphold strict limits on the authority of immigration agents to stop people for questioning.”

It is really astounding that the right-wing radicals on the Supreme Court are so isolated and disconnected, not only alienated from the American people, but from the rest of the federal judiciary.

The only people they’re in tune with are their fellow fascists in the Republican Party.

But we can’t get rid of them! They are in for life. They have defined their corrupt practice of taking money for decisions as being “gratuities” instead of bribes. Plus we will never have a Senate majority large enough to impeach any of them. John Kerry was Swiftboated, Al Gore was fat, Hillary was shrill, Harris’s laugh bothered people and none of them were pure enough. So here we are and we are stuck with it. I’m in my 70s and I’ll probably die before we get a democracy back.

Amy Coney Island said she doesn’t even know what a Constitutional crisis would look like. But that we are definitely not in one. :unamused:

I think we can safely say the life term with no oversight gambit was a losing one for the Founders.

The current Court majority is so thick that they loyally repeat FOX news memes, showing that what got them to the highest court in the land sure wasn’t critical thinking ability.

They have their fingers on the pulse in the same way that John Wayne Gacy was a medical surgeon — they are so convinced of their own special insight that they could care less what actual people experience.

Now the Shadow Docket has absolved them of the responsibility of even mentioning the Constitution.

They have become the King’s five black-robed jesters.

How is this NOT unreasonable search and seizure?!? I guess there were no hispanic/latinx persons in revolutionary times, so they are not “originalist”?!?

I think all we can do now is hope that California’s gerrymander is enough to counter these actions, fighting fire with fire. Otherwise all is lost, and there is no hope at all. As always, it is the fault of the SCOTUS that we fall apart and become an angry ungovernable mob - see below.

(2019) In the case Rucho v. Common Cause, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that federal courts cannot review partisan gerrymandering claims under the U.S. Constitution. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority that such claims present nonjusticiable “political questions” because the Constitution lacks “clear, manageable and politically neutral” standards for courts to apply, and the task of addressing partisan districting belongs to legislatures, Congress, or states—not federal judges. The decision consolidated challenges from North Carolina (Republican-drawn maps favoring the GOP) and Maryland (Democratic-drawn maps favoring Democrats), effectively shielding extreme partisan redistricting from federal judicial intervention while leaving open challenges under state constitutions or laws. This built on earlier cases like Vieth v. Jubelirer (2004), where a plurality called partisan gerrymandering

In a 6-3 vote with all liberal justices dissenting, the high court has allowed immigration agents to continue conducting “roving patrols” in LA, meaning they can stop and detain anyone they suspect of being in the country illegally.

The whole “shadow docket” desperately needs some bright light shone on it.

Other blue states need to wake up and gerrymander GOPers to oblivion. Where is end weak kneed NY Democrats? Will Pritzker do it in Illinois? Stop whining Democrats and just do it.

I gotta say, it seems like state legislators are some of the more articulate and active elected officials standing up for decency these days. State Rep Ashley Aune sounds like a great person to run for national office.

Unfortunately that’s a losing fight for Dems if every state that could do it and gain an advantage goes for it. Best we can hope for is a stalemate, not a full-blown fight. Free gifted link.

Somehow “drain the swamp” means taking orders from the fucking swamp itself. Can we finally admit this country is full of fucking morons and cowards. Land of the free and the home of the brave is great marketing, but it’s fucking bullshit and now the entire world knows it.

A women is a person that other people come out of, amirite?

Oddly, if you buy into that oversimplified trope, people with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) are not women, although they are phenotypically female and are invariably assigned female at birth.

So under Texas’ new bathroom law, people with CAIS can’t use a bathroom in a government building. They can’t use the men’s room because they were assigned female at birth, and they can’t use the women’s room because they aren’t a person that other people could come out of.

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate those people?

I don’t think so. We’re still parsing words and hoping to be saved by the Epstein files. Lot’s a good news yesterday but more middle finger please. And yes, we shood call the MAGA’s out for what they are, uneducated, uninformed, and proud of their ignorance.

How much of redistricting can change Missouri? Unless the farmers wake up and see what’s happening, it won’t make any difference.
