Michigan Republicans Demand DOJ Send Federal Election Monitors for 2026

Originally published at: Michigan Republicans Demand DOJ Send Federal Election Monitors for 2026 - TPM – Talking Points Memo

On Thursday, a group of Michigan Republican lawmakers sent a letter to U.S. Attorney Pam Bondi asking the Department of Justice to deploy federal election monitors to oversee Michigan’s primary and general elections next year. The reason for the request, as outlined in the letter, centers on a supposed conflict of interest around Democratic Secretary…

It’s always projection with the crazies: this illegal act is of course what we would do, so others must be doing it, too.

So in 2019 Josh Hawley was Mo AG, and was running to be US Senator. Now in Mo AG isn’t overseeing running elections, but if there was hanky-panky going on he would have had authority to investigate an election where he was on the ballot seeking another position.

Frankly, it wouldn’t break my heart if states enacted legislation barring people from having any involvement in the administration of elections in which they appear on the ballot, but as with everything else, I don’t believe Democrats should unilaterally disarm.

What happens when the DOJ partisan “election-monitors” insist all the GOP candidates won, despite no evidence of that on the ground? What if it then goes to a GOP-MAGA–hack judge?

It sounds like every election is will be a fight-to-the-death. That’s the outcome of the SCOTUS Chevron case back in June. All the agencies will forever be filled by partisan trolls and hacks. None will ever be able to follow evidence and say 2+2=4 anymore, because that’s not how Trump works. He thinks everyone cheats, so he himself is AOK with cheating, 24/7.

Just more performative bullshit from the party that is nothing but.

Plenty of justification. The GQP is afraid of losing and they will do whatever is necessary to prevent that happening.

As the diarist refers, Republican’ts are as silent as a whore in church (as my late Grandpa John would have said) when GA SoS Raffensberg oversees his own election for governor there—an avenue well blazed by the current GA governor, former SoS Brian Kemp. :face_with_raised_eyebrow::face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

…a supposed conflict of interest around Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is also running for governor in 2026.

So here’s the good news from someone who has spent time monitoring Michigan elections, there’s an army of well-trained people who monitor every election on behalf of the people of Michigan and the process is remarkably well run.
This letter is simply performative hand-wringing attempting to masquerade as actual concern. Partisan hackery at the actual election level will have very little impact on the actual voting process.

Feels to me like the large plan of the GOP under the banner of Trump is coming into view. Oligarchy, inequality, and cruelty are the policies. These are of course very unpopular, so the plan is to corrupt/rig elections. So much for populism.

Shorter GOP: Help! the Dems are conducting fair elections complete with audits. We can’t win. Last time we couldn’t even get on the ballot. Help!

exactly—there are armies, employed and operated at the county/township/city level with very little connivance with any of the state GOOPers or Dems
