Former Marine pilot Amy McGrath is projected to narrowly win the Kentucky Democratic Senate primary, beating progressive Charles Booker to challenge Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in the November election.
Earlier today on WaPo there were only 22% precincts reporting and she was ahead by about 4000 votes. I just really want to see what Moscow Mitch’s totals are.
People in Kentucky know better than I do, but can a woman win? It makes me really nervous but it would be awesome if she did.
KY Dems have been doing the same strategy every election against Mitch of running a moderate against him and it has never worked. I thought Allison Grimes had a shot in 2014 and the polls were close. But then the polls closed and Mitch was immediately declared the winner by a double digit margin.
Probably no one here wants Mitch out more than me since I’ve been following him for over a decade and even made him a center point for one of my college papers about how his opinions about corporations being able to give unlimited political donations is destructive to our country.
I wanted Booker, but I seriously want McGrath to win if it gets Mitch out of office. The problem is that she’s running an uninspiring campaign that is fodder for Mitch to steamroll over. If she actually wants to win; she needs to actually talk about the issues like job losses, unions, price of medical care and insulin. Stop doing fundraisers and actually go to the rural areas and talk to the working class.
The only way she can win is by the skin of her teeth by outright winning Eastern KY and siphoning some votes from the west.
Consider the fact that all of the other statewide races that year were won by the GOP with double digit margins. Only reason they voted out Bevin is because a lot of them hated him.
Not one shot has been fired, i.e. a campaign between McGrath and Mitch, and we’ve lost. What’s the point of putting up a candidate if the outcome is preordained.
