Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Tuesday shamelessly hyped President Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan that he opposed, only to pan it as a “windfall” that can’t happen again, all in the same breath.
“After COVID and the previous ‘Administration’ utterly trashed the economy, Democrats signed a bill that will give cities and counties in Kentucky close to $700-800 million in aid.
“So vote for us, so that can never fucking happen again”
‘Yeah yeah OK it worked and I was PERSONALLY for it (even though I voted against it!) but we can’t have that AGAIN because we are saving money for the next 1% tax cut when we regain the majority! C’mon people…you KNOW me. I’m FOR you even when I’m NOT…’
“Despite saying that his home state received $4 billion as part of the COVID relief plan — noting that the total amount is twice what the state received from last year’s coronavirus relief CARES Act — McConnell warned against another “windfall” passed by a Democrat-led Congress.”
Repubs love the free money for their home states, but rail against “how costly” the spending is.
McConnell and Republicans are really good at propaganda, though they have softened up their base for decades to accept anything they say. Saying “it’s great you’re getting all this money from those nasty Democrats without our help, don’t expect any more because it’s all wasted money” with a straight face is something you can only do if you’ve fooled enough people so they believe anything you say, even when it is contradictory from one sentence to the next.
“It passed on a straight party line vote, not a single member of my party voted for it. So you’re going to get a lot more money,” McConnell said. “I didn’t vote for it, but you’re going to get a lot more money. Cities and counties in Kentucky will get close to $700-800 million.”
“I didn’t vote for it because it was bad for me politically, but I knew it was necessary for the people who are hurting…and I’m ready to not do it all again, for the same reasons.”
All of these theatrics from McConnell come from the same script that requires that GOPers have to vote as though they are several strata higher in socioeconomic status.
Other than masochism, I have no other explanation for voting like that.
