Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in an interview with a reporter for USA Today that, should the leaked SCOTUS opinion become the Court’s final ruling, a national abortion ban would be “possible.”
The split second the GOP gets the trifecta back–Senate, House & Presidency the filibuster will be killed and not only will abortion be banned so will any form of birth control. And all of that will be sanctified by the six radicals on the corrupted court.
Use this.
But not only abortion, make it clear right from the start the threat is broad.
Tie it up with other GOP statements, to fully exploit GOP candidates own words, blow it up to the national level, as in GOP candidate in Arizona anti-birth control
and kooky Sen. Blackburn of Tenn. statements only married couples should have access to contraception.
Sure it will be “nut-picking” but Republicans have shown if you run with this hard and repeated (picking nuts on the Left side to back-foot Dems), it can work, and change the dynamic of mid-terms up-and-down the ticket. Do not think only national races.
Don’t make this just abortion about which many people are conflicted, show how broad the risk is and make GOP own that so JoeSixPack and Co understand their rubbers access is at risk too. Broad threats are more mobilising.
Privacy to do what you want at home is at risk from the Theocrats, for reals. This can be brought home but go Wide and Big, make it clear it’s not just the narrow subject, make it Radical Reactionary - not conservative, Radical Reactionary. (it is of course)
McConnell will ditch the filibuster the second it’s inconvenient for him to keep it. I’m not so sure he would be on board killing abortion rights nationwide unless it benefitted him personally. As always with MoscowMitch, follow the money and power.
I would believe him on his self-interest, he would not see a national ban in his narrow interest as it would be deadly for his political power. I am sure he much prefers the drip drip approach, slowly imperceptibly bioling the frogs than a quick raise of temperature and provoking reaction.
But he also preferred Trump to go away for similar self-interest and he didn’t take any measures really to take real action. He’d not promote it himself but he won’t stop it in reality either and the theocrats will go full bore now.
He trying to leverage abortion as an electoral issue, since the Spreme Court is doing its best to take that shiny toy away from the GOP. The last thing he wants is a “win” so that voters might turn to economic issues!
Whos going to pay for the enforcement of this national mandate of forced birth? How many women police and prosecutors will resign before applying the new law? How many more women’s prisions will we need?
Obviously McConnell said this simply to energize his base, but he’s not serious. Certain states will gladly outlaw abortion, birth control, premarital sex, etc… not for the intent of fully restricting these rights, but rather as another excuse to imprison or otherwise marginalize minorities and the poor. The wealthy will always have access to these rights since law enforcement will rarely go after them for violating these laws except as political payback.
Though this tactic will always be popular in much of the southeast and many rural states, it would trigger far too much of a backlash if extended to the rest of the country and McConnell knows this. He’ll talk a good show when he knows it will play to his base, but that’s it.
McConnell doesn’t care about abortion one way or another. He cares about being majority leader again, cutting taxes, confirming conservative judges, blocking Biden’s agenda, and winning back total control of the government by the GOP. Every other issue, including abortion, is viewed in that framework. He’ll say and do what he needs to to make forward progress on his personal agenda, with no regard for consistency in what he says and does on other issues.
