Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proposed pushing former President Donald Trump’s Senate impeachment trial until mid-February, dropping the decision in Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) lap on Thursday evening.

He’s setting up the excuse that “We can’t vote to convict him because he wasn’t given a fair shot to defend himself.” Even McConnell is looking for a way out now, because his previous statements clearly boxed him in as believing Trump should be convicted. It’s all about the ‘out.’

I propose that we don’t do anything that Moscow Mitch proposes. A month from now, nobody will remember anything, because everybody has gnat-like attention spans.
There are still unknown variables about the length of the trial and whether it will include witnesses
I wonder if impeachment managers could secure some cooperating witnesses from those charged? Like hearing these people after 30 days from the riot might scare the shit out of some of these Republican senators, scare them that the monsters they created might be planning to go after them next. Yeah, “but he needs time to prepare” and Cornyn is busy promising that no other business will take place until after the trial, because the goal is to spitefully delay everything, including COVID relief as punishment for the House Dems having the gall to impeach a seditious POTUS. This is all a delaying tactic and an effort to manufacture the excuse to vote against conviction.
Same with McConnell blowing up the power sharing agreement by demanding it be changed to include a promise not to get rid of the filibuster. Their entire game from day one is manufacturing their “Democrat fascists trying to rule like far left socialists and take all your rights despite Biden and the Dems only winning by a hair’s breadth in November.” They are going to work extremely hard to try to shift the fence-sitting people who believe the “middle” is always the correct answer in hopes they can take the Senate back at least in 2022. Meanwhile, their state legislatures will be trying to find a way to take the House back through gerrymandering on the new census data. AND if Schumer fails to agree to promise not to get rid of the filibuster, McConnell will have set up his argument that he’s just going to get rid of it himself, even if Schumer never does so.
