Two more key GOP senators have joined ranks with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in his controversial move to fill the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat.
McConnell-Grassley rule: A Republican senate has not confirmed a Democratic Supreme Court pick since Cleveland presidency and we are not going ot break that tradition.
There will be a Democratic new justice when the President and Senate a Democratic, and a Republican otherwise.
Well, add 4 seats to scotus, add 4 senators via DC and PR. Pass a bunch of voter rights reforms. And raise a middle finger to these disgraceful assholes.
It all comes back to Republicans and how they look at Nixon. They have decided the biggest problem with Nixon is that he resigned. He should have given the middle finger to the country and stuck it out. It was then that they decided there will be one rule, and one rule only in Politics… IOKIYAR.
If they all stick with it they can keep their power despite being a minority.
Short Gardner. I’m not a woman, so not really my problem how many more women die or suffer permanent injury from illegal abortions. Aren’t women fungible anyway? That’s what the president said.
Moscow Mitch has the votes, he will ram the nomination through the Judiciary Committee with the help of chairman Leningrad Lindsey (without any discussion or vetting AT ALL) and immediately bring it to the floor of the Senate for a vote, which he will win 50-46; Romney votes against, Collins votes “Present”, Murkowski “does not vote” (abstains).
Trump picks Barbara Lagoa (to help win Florida and Arizona by shoring up Conservative Latino support).
She is a conservative Catholic, frequently citing Catholic Law in support of her decisions.
She is a reliable Hard-Core Right-Wing Judge, former member of the Florida Supreme Court, and has always siding with Business against workers and has been praised by the Florida Family Policy Council, an anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ group.
This. I’m shocked that we have so baked in the number of representatives as some sacrosanct rule, when in fact it is expandable (and has been in the past)
Canada, with about 13% of US population of people, has nearly as many parliamentary seats as we do congressional ones. While that may seem to fly in the face of the “Americans want small government” mantra we’ve been conditioned to accept, it helps to have that many because people can actually still win a riding simply by having good standing in their own communities, or by knocking on a lot of doors personally. It lessens the impact of money, and allows subtle shifts of political will to have big impacts on the composition of parliament (having multiple parties helps with that too, but that’s another topic).
Bottom line is expanding the size of Congress would go along way to ending the corrosive gerrymandering that exists today and dilute the influence of big money in our elections.
Interesting. The GOP has decided to sacrifice the Senate majority and perhaps even the White House to get this SC seat. The GOP has probably decided that the Dems are bluffing regarding their potential responses. However, as any decent poker player knows, the only way to keep an aggressive player from running over you is to occasionally call their big plays when you have a decent hand. If the GOP is willing to break the Senate in order to stack the SC, then the Dems should be prepared to go ‘all in’.
Yes, increase the # of representatives in the House. Institute the Wyoming rule. No congressional district can have a population more than the least populous state. If you institute this rule, the House will increase to like 700 seats. Makes it harder to gerrymander too. Last time the # of reps was increased was in 1929!
I never thought I would say this, but Sen. Romney has been one of the few major GOP pols who have shown any principle or moral courage. I get the impression that he truly despises Mr. Trump and will do what he thinks is right.
So not Barrett? She’s already vetted. Lagoa of Elian Gonzales fame, only has about a year on the 11th circuit, so not much of a record. But let’s see. At this point nothing surprises.
