And when that fails to result in a vote of 67 in the Senate trial trump and the repugs have another year to grind the failure of the impeachment in to their and the publics’ faces. I don’t see the benefit of getting it all over so soon. Just my opinion.

Everyone expects MoscowMitch to protect Trump, so his acquittal (and things like this ad) becomes the ammunition to pound the republicans as commie traitors putting Russia First.
An acquittal on party lines is going to be seen as entirely political. It’s not a loss for the Dems.

That person couldn’t give me an answer then and they won’t be able to do it now. But hey, ‘no names’…

Agreed. Moreover, the longer Donnie has his hands on the levers of government, the more he can tilt the playing field in 2020. There’s absolutely no interest in allowing that.

Pretty much. And, hey, maybe the Republicans will surprise. I don’t expect 67, but if we peeled off even a handful, that would be a plus to note that even parts of his own party are uncomfortable with him breaking the law.

Well, right now it has to go there because otherwise we go into a full shutdown. Which would screw with everything (and if Trump figures out that he can mess with the impeachment hearings by having a shutdown, then it would be a very loooooong one).

What’s interesting in this ad is that Moscow Mitch is saying please donate money because the GOP needs to remain in control of the Senate to prevent trump’s removal from office.
So, this campaign fundraising pitch is based on:
- trump isn’t removed from, or otherwise leaves office before the end of his first term.
- trump is then re-elected.
- The House again impeaches trump (I’m assuming a new impeachment action is required after a new Congress is seated.)
3a. This means McConnell believes the House will remain Democratic.
Only after these conditions are met does it matter who controls the Senate in 2021 w.r.t. trump.

Last time he wasn’t facing impeachment hearings.
A shutdown would screw with getting replies out of the administration and DOJ, for example, because they’d just say that the staff who can answer are furloughed.
Not saying it would go well for him, but it certainly would be a powerful tool to run the clock on impeachment.

A side effect - the majority of DoJ, National Security and White House positions are considered “mission essential” - employees must go to work even if they are not being paid. That’s not going to make these people very happy…
A prolonged shutdown could backfire ‘bigly’ for trump in more ways than one.
