McCarthy Signals ‘Nyet’ to Kyiv Trip - TPM – Talking Points Memo

With the House now in Republican hands, Ukraine needs GOP support to survive.

In recent weeks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been trying to arrange a call or visit from Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). On Tuesday, Zelensky publicly invited McCarthy to come to Kyiv — an offer that the speaker appears to have refused.

."what war caused us, "

I’m thinking that should read “what war cost us”. However, McCarthy doesn’t need to see Ukraine. He’s too busy hanging on by his fingernails as Speaker. And no, it doesn’t make him more empathetic to the plight of Ukraine, also under siege. “Empathy” is a concept unknown in Today’s Republican Party.

“I don’t have to go to Ukraine to understand where there’s a blank check or not,” McCarthy told CNN on Tuesday.

“LA LA LA LA I CAN’T HEEEEARRR YOU…”

McCarthy is waiting for his staff to find out if his blow dryer will work in the electrical outlets on the train to Kyiv. (As if the Koward would ever get near a war zone.)

Looking forward to more trolling by Pres. Zelensky of the Empty Suit Speaker.

Maybe in addition to “The Walk of the Brave” in Kyiv (Biden’s plaque below), they can do a Chicken Coop of the Refuseniks.

The best thing about Donald Trump not being president in my view is that Vladimir Putin is no longer the most powerful man in America. Once Kevin McCarthy is no longer speaker we can say the same thing about the House or Representatives.

That said, to smart Republicans, supporting cutting aid to the Ukraine is a political disaster. In fact if you watch the so called “establishment” Republicans, Governor Chris Sununu for example, the are attacking Biden for not doing enough for Ukraine.

That is Republicans realize that most Americans are supportive of the Ukraine and if nothing else what McCarthy is doing is not just bad but terrible politics that make it even harder to defeat incumbent president Joe Biden and more likely the Democrats will be in control of both the Congress and Senate in 2025…

In the end, I do not believe there is anyway McCarthy, in spite of what deals he may have made with the Putin caucus to be Speaker, will be able to stop aid to the Ukraine. That is there are enough individual members of the Republican House that realize stopping aid to the Ukraine will make them to blame for a Russian victory and that will end their time in congress. Or to put another way, I actually think there are enough Republican members of Congress, it only takes a handful, who will kick McCarthy out as speaker rather than risking being blamed for Ukraine losing to Russia.

But McCarthy just taking this approach, even when and not if Ukraine gets all the aid Biden proposes, is political disaster.

McCarthy would never go to Ukraine. That would require a degree of courage. The “speaker” is clearly a spineless trump butt licker, and trump is a big putin butt licker.

This exactly. It doesn’t matter whether he’s owned by Moscow or merely requires the support of people owned by Moscow to hold his seat. Either way, he’s Putin’s man and the only question is how many layers of rationalization are between him and the reality.

Likewise, if a model that posits that there are a a couple of dozen Republicans in Congress who’ve been coopted by Russian intelligence agencies explains observed behavior and makes testable prediction thus far proven accurate, that’s enough for me to say they’re effectively Russian assets even media norms preclude the inquiry.
