State prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney’s office have issued subpoenas to President Trump’s insurance broker and lender, the New York Times reports.
[“The moves mark an escalation of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s investigation into President Trump’s financial affairs which, unlike federal probes, could result in charges that are immune from the President’s pardon power.”]
Better save all that money from the big grift, Donnie-boy. You’re gonna need it for other legal matters pretty soon.
Now that’s gonna be real entertaining.
Before we get too excited, remember that criminal tax fraud is difficult to prove. The prosecution must show that the defendant had the specific intent to evade taxes and “reliance on counsel” is a complete defense to the charges.
About every two or three months I consider creating an account with the NYT, and this is one because the story isn’t clear to me. Vance is New York County, i.e. Manhattan, DA, so I don’t know what the state prosecutors referred to in the lead are doing in the mix.
ETA never mind, I see now these aren’t autonomous county districts, cool cool.
… the probe encompasses allegations of tax, bank, and insurance fraud…
I guess this means that money laundering isn’t a State crime - I’ve always figured that any examination of Trump’s business practices would cough up all four. I’ll need to look that one up…
