Manchin Is The Problem On Nearly Every Remaining Issue

Democrats have been saying for days (weeks!) that they’re close to a deal on reconciliation — with just a handful of outstanding issues. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has the distinction of being the problem lawmaker blocking progress on just about all of them.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1392407

Just what is Manchin saying when he asserts “we have to do it right” on family leave? He’s proven he can’t move Republicans - so instead…he shuts down Democrats? The small man from WV has far too much influence. Put him on an island and let him crown himself king…just get him out of the way!

When Manchin is next up for re-election, I hope the DNC and DSCC spend the money they would have spent retaining his seat into two or three other seats that can be picked up.

The Former Guy carried the state by a wide margin, so Manchin is likely to be replaced with a Republican.

Yeah. I think this is the last cash-out before the scumbag retires and a Republican takes the seat.

I don’t recall even the likes of Lieberman, Bayh and Landrieux being such unrepentant dicks on major Dem legislation. This asshole’s in a class by himself. And given his wealth, age and reputation, why is he doing this? Do his major donors have dirt on him? Does he care about reelection that badly (and does he think that screwing his constituents is the way to do that?)? Is he genuinely this opposed to all these provisions? Or does he just get off on being an asshole, dick and all-around horrible person?

Good, because by then it won’t matter.

Manchin is basically committing suicide for all of America with his bullshit.

That right there. Let Manchin win or lose his seat, I don’t care which. If he’s replaced by a Republican, tough cookies. We need to move Hell and High Water to get two or three other Senate seats from the R side to the D side. I’m so goddamned sick of seeing year after year the POS Manchin playing coy and everyone saying, “…but we need him on other votes…” when the fact is he can’t be counted on EVER. He “promises” things and then always has a loophole he’s constructed to wriggle out of whatever commitment someone thought they had from him. Let him and his horrible offspring rot – we have to stop letting him kill every necessary thing we try.

This only means crashing up against fake deadlines

THESE ARE NOT DEADLINES.

They are targets. They are not deadlines. Using ‘deadline’ language lets the media add more drama to it, but it is false, and it is misleading. It serves only to make missing that target into ‘failure’ rather than ‘process’.

‘We’d like to get it done by X’ and then things taking longer is how life works. Everyone who owns a home has had contractors take longer than estimated. Everyone’s had shipping delays, or delays at work. Everyone knows the difference between ‘we’re shooting for…’ and a deadline.

@kate_riga please, please stop using language that feeds misinformation and gives people a false impression of what’s going on. Josh wants to go ‘oh, Biden’s poll numbers…’ well this is why.

Please, stop and think about how people will read into what you write.

I’ll take Door Number Three. He likes being special in that sickening special way.

Yeah, cuz what does it matter whether or not McConnell can simply refuse to hold hearings on a SCOTUS appointment, right?

What Manchin is doing is creating a platform for Dems to run on in 2022. In essence, they get to campaign saying “we are not giving up on paid leave, we will extend the child tax credit and widen eligibility, we will…. So elect more Democratic Reps and Sens”

There could be no better idea than to run on BBB anew. After all, Republicans have been running on killing abortion for at least 40 years now.

The gray catbird, Dumetella carolinensis , on a high perch.

" The catbird seat " is an idiomatic phrase used to describe an enviable position, often in terms of having the upper hand or greater advantage in any type of dealing among parties. It derives from the secluded perch on which the grey catbird makes mocking calls.

Until the Cooper’s Hawk takes notice.

The Democrats should get what they can as soon as they can.

He’s not up until 2024. He’s shown he’s not a reliable supporter of Biden’s agenda. So let’s put our efforts into electing senators who are in 2022. Then in 2024 we can tell him that we’re ready to support him, except for just this one issue…and this other issue…

Polyannaish? Maybe. It’s an experiment that didn’t happen. And I’m glad that it didn’t.

BTW, Trump is going to VA for a rally.

We have those hawks. One of them got the Morning Dove that had roosted on my Front Porch Cover. I felt bad for the dove trying to make a family, but that hawk, damn, no stopping her.

We need more hawks like that in the Democratic Caucus.

Maybe Gillibrand can make up for Al and threaten Manchin’s balls, literally, if he doesn’t drop his resistance to anything useful in the bills.

Or maybe we can go with visonseeker, but that takes a lot of MSM overcoming and puts everything in the GOTV basket, which is why the goppers are working overtime to gut voting.

Absolutely. But let’s also not start calling for friendly fire before we’re sure we can survive it. We get seats in 2022, great. Will we have enough to be able to lose a few seats in 2024 while we take aim at Joe Manchin, or will we pick up 3 next year, only to lose 3 in '24 without losing Manchin?

That would be a good time to serve him some subpoenas.
