New Yorkers in nursing homes, long-term care facilities and hospices are dying of COVID-19 at rates far beyond what testing has shown, new data from the city indicates.

It was the latest show of defiance by the strongman leader, who has dismissed worries about the disease as a “psychosis” and variously suggested drinking vodka, going to saunas and driving tractors to fight the virus.
Trump will declare this new approach to counting the number of deaths from COVID-19 fake news and an attempt to make him look bad. I bet he will try to force the CDC to go back to the prior method of counting the dead.
Too busy to test. Also no testing kits available. Those consigned to mass graves can be evaluated and counted when the remains are claimed. Those who are cremated should have death certificates with the presumed cause of death already completed. We aren’t just bean counting here. It is critical for health departments to report as accurately as possible. This assures useful knowledge about the behavior of the virus for epidemiological studies and future strategies. And not least, health departments need to maintain their credibility if they hope for the people to trust in them.
I am sure there are a lot of nursing home executives who don’t want the deaths reported as Covid-19 related. Some fear liability for allowing the infection into their facilities. Some fear their reputations will be damaged. Some are just Trumpians. Many will try to gum up the results. We have to know.
Gothamist on Tuesday quoted an unnamed nurse at Fairview Rehab & Nursing Home who said the facility had run out of room to properly store bodies in recent weeks.
“The ones who died here were not tested,” the nurse said. “We know it’s because of the virus because it’s people who’ve been here for years who suddenly cannot breathe. They die very quickly.”
In related news, there are people dying all over the country who are not tested for COVID-19. Many of them are in the 29 states that Trump says are “in extremely good shape.”
How long will it be before nursing home workers just stop showing up for work? Many of these workers are quite young, with small children. The scanty reporting on cases in nursing homes does not differentiate between residents and staff.
DUH! no test available so does it surprise anyone other than the ASS in the WH.
Since social distancing was downplayed by the ASS we can definitely attribute to him the 90% of U.S. coronavirus deaths that could have been prevented. MURDERER…

There are already very distressing stories about this related to nursing homes in Quebec. Poorly managed facilities and overwhelmed (also underpaid and not-even-slightly-trained-for-this) staff lead to just heartbreaking situations of seniors being left to die alone in their rooms. This scenario has played out and will play out all across North America again and again over the coming months. And few of these poor souls will be tested, so their deaths won’t contribute to the mountain of evidence that every level of government failed their obligation to protect their citizens.
You know the horrific scenes after a building fire ravages a seniors home? Like that, but in slow-motion and multiplied dozens if not hundreds of times. That’s what the bungled response to this epidemic has created.

I’ve seen extrapolations based on this showing the obvious fact that his deranged denial has and will cost the lives of tens of thousands of people. Tens of thousands.
