Legislative Republicans Sue Whitmer For Stay-At-Home Order

As promised, Republicans in the Michigan state legislature sued Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) Wednesday morning, arguing that she exceeded her authority by extending the state’s stay-at-home order last week.

Posted this elsewhere but it’s worth repeating:

I’ve read about Americans partying in spring break in Florida and Wisconsin protesters wanting to open up business now - when challenged they said they don’t fear dying of Covid-19. I find that very odd. Because I know hardly anyone in NZ under the age of 65 who acts from fear dying of Covid-19. What we live in fear of is being the one who spreads Covid-19. The Air New Zealand steward who came back from overseas just before the lock-down, who spread it at a wedding in Southland creating NZ’s biggest cluster of cases, killing the groom’s father and others… none of us want to be that guy.

Be the bloke who killed his mates' families? Nah. Not doing that. ---Meno
Too many of our fellow citizens either don't mind if they are "that guy" or lack sufficient imagination or empathy to see themselves in "that guy." Doesn't really matter where the problem derives, the cultural outcome is toxic.

The businesses who have any kind of profit-margin other than gang-related types will not have the customers they want, particularly after a few weeks

The complaint reads like a bill of reasons to reelect the Governor. No one truthfully can say Whitmer’s responses to the pandemic haven’t been thorough, timely, decisive, and based entirely in public health priorities. The judge will rule for her and give the Repub legislators cover from their frothing, gunslinging constituents.

Of course, they are. After having their a$$e$ safe for the last 6 weeks, NOW backed by big money they are SURE DAMMIT SURE that their ‘constitutional rights’ to infect people are being infringed. Twits.

It’s tough to be a woman in a position of authority. Always that just slightly off kilter virulence in the mode of attack, always the presumed special vulnerability because the target is female. Good for Whitmer that she’s up to it. No doubt she’d been through it all her life.

I’m despondent over this general situation where a group of conservatives say “we have a right to a clusterfuck, even though some people will die! “Then, a Democratic governor says, “No, I’m not going to sanction a clusterfuck for the good of public health and minimizing fatalities; shelter in place.” The conservatives sue and it goes to the courts and conservative judges rule that the right to a clusterfuck is enshrined in the constitution. Viz. Wisconsin. Yes, I’m being hyperbolic, but I’m also furious. What the fuck sort of governing system is this? It’s not law, it’s slow motion chaos!

Republicans…the same stupid all over it would appear. Can’t wait to see them all devastated in November…but that would just be a start unfortunately. And, yes I know there are some decent Republicans. For the most part, that subset seems mute from my chair.

An acquaintance of mine responded to my asking whether she wanted to be “that person” thusly: If you’re not willing to risk getting covid-19, stay home.

I probed different scenarios under which that might not be an option, and she could justify for herself a rationale that made whether you caught it entirely under your control.

It was both fascinating and horrifying to listen to her.

I see the greasy fingerprints of the “Dark Money” crowd (Koch, the Mercers, the DeVos clan, et. al.) all over this. Once again, their overarching objective is to prove that “government doesn’t work” and to establish Big Business as the ultimate rulers of our country. They must be stopped.

So am I.

The GOP is in power. And they will maximize it, no matter to whom it harms.

It’s power they are after. More of it.

Those of us in the history racket** do not need for it to happen to us to get it.

**and those who stayed awake in history class

always the presumed special vulnerability because the target is female.

Yes, but she is formidable, meaning the unfair advantages don’t apply. And when they don’t apply - in favor of the male species - it’s always an advantage.
