Exceeding your authority is denying a manicure.
Not exceeding your authority is demanding a trans-vaginal ultrasound probe for pregnant women seeking abortion.
If only.
The thing that particulaly enrages me is the lip service to safety measures in the work environment. You just know none of it is ever going to happen – short of yet more legislation and rigid enforcement, which will again be litigated.
Con Ed (energy utility in NYC) is doing street work outside my window. The workmen are all standing shoulder to shoulder as they go, no change in work habits, obviously no retraining. The only difference is they have on masks. Woot, woot.
Oh, yeah. But the virus doesn’t give a shit about lawyers, judges, the supreme court. It will continue to infect and kill citizens and no interpretation of the law, no CFR, no jurist is going to stop it from doing what it does — reproduce itself.
OK… so the idea is POC. (the people the MAGAs want to go to work, get infected and die)
Workers
In dirty cities
HAVING TO BE FORCED TO WORK
Amirite?
So a MAGA somehow gets infected by ONE of the aforementioned POC (there are permutations of how easy this can happen…)
And that particular MAGA spreads it all over Hooterville.
FIFY. It is important to keep in mind that not everyone is being given the option to social distance at home and that they are the ones most at risk from these stupid assholes, because the assholes will be just as reckless in their interactions with the customer service workers serving them as they are in pushing to reopen.
I wasn’t particularly excited for this governor when I voted for her in the election but she was the best on the ballot. Since then I’ve been really impressed with her ability to take it to the conservaturds in the state, and her focus on public health. I like her a bunch.
That said, being from Kent County…which now has the greatest increase in cases outside the Detroit tri-county area, and coming from an area of Kent County that has the most cases on top of that (even more then the Michigan prison system)…she’s literally saving my bacon. Good on ya, Gretchen. Keep on keeping on. Those assholes are a wholly owned subsidiary of Rethugican think tanks and their pathetic big business donors. They don’t give a shit about their constituents. They only care about their own personal interests and ambitions. Time to vote them out and give Whitmer the legislature she deserves to protect public health for the common good.
Their problem is once they get in power they are void of original thought and have no solutions so everything is blamed on the Democrats.
Whitmer didn’t extend the stay-at-home order, which is due to expire May 15; she extended the declaration of emergency (which will now expire May 28). Even some of my fellow Michiganders have been confusing the two. The Republicans are suing because she extended the emergency declaration without their approval.
That’s how they want to think. But these hooters also spread it themselves. I live in NYC. They come by the bus and train load every day, multiple times a day, from all over the country, to take in Madame Tussaud’s and eat in crap restaurants around Times Square and see past their prime Disney musical extravaganzas. Oh and crowd into the double decker tour buses.
They were still doing this well into March. The Broadway theatres didn’t close till the 12th of the month.
So when these people went back to Hooterville this time, they took a very special part of NY with them.
Governors’ and private industry mandating workers, 70% of which, or thereabouts, are POC, at those Midwest meatpacking plants, to work or face sacking is one of the worst examples of industrial racism I have ever witnessed. Their only option is to strike, an action which would imperil their families’ livelihoods.
The approval that we know would never have been given, which is why she used the 1945 Emergency Powers of Governor" that is still on the books.
Republicans are playing politics with people’s lives and the majority of Michiganders want to be kept safe. Those idiots egged on by conservatives and their money are the minority and will just have to wait for a reopening. But a return to normal is a hazy dream, and I fear we won’t be able to do anything about that.
Get used to it. It’s all part of the plan. With the Courts sufficiently loaded with Right Wing ideologues suit will be the GOP go to method for the next few decades. “legislation from the bench” and they used to rail about it. But with the GOP era nearing it’s end it’s all they have left.
Emergency Mangers were all fine and dandy when Snyder was governor. He kept those fuckers on in so many black communities year after fucking year with the aid of the Republican-led legislature, which I believe had a veto proof majority at the time. They still hold the legislature but I don’t think its veto proof…so MI needs to get rid of a few more thugs to flip the entire state legislature and we will return to the great progressive state we once were.
There was no reason to keep those Emergency Managers in charge as long as they had thereby denying the democratic process to take place in those cities. But now that Whitmer has invoked her authority during a public health emergency suddenly its not alright to do simply because they are ideologically opposed to it. Shoes on the other foot now plus she has the 1945 law on her side. The article didn’t mention what judge this will go in front of but I hope its a good one.
Good practice for VP, maybe. She is earning her stripes, for sure.
As has been posted here, Red States are basically giving up on the fight against COVID-19. Another data point: Farmers markets will soon open around the nation. Come for fresh eats, coffee, a danish, conversation, and Corona. Ya’ll come back next week!
Or not.
I just read the brief. It goes like this:
Whereas, WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
My take: They are willing to let YOU die in order to make their point.
One of the more interesting elements of these kinds of situations is how conservatives who personally go through a life threatening situation to which they would willingly subject others, often transform overnight into liberals (at least in relation to that particular threat). Note, for example Boris Johnson.
That was precisely the point. In addition to the obvious and biggest reason to shut them down, saving lives and keeping the spread of it down, there’s also the reality that there wouldn’t be enough workers and customers to sustain most of these business, if not right away, then soon enough.
I mean, a cyanide dispensary isn’t like to remain in business for very long, once its longtime (as in one-time) customers stop coming back, and others are naturally squeamish about giving it a try.
So you’re saying Trump helped write it?
