Lie being the operant word. No one “thought” this disease was like the flu. That idea was pushed to minimize people’s impressions of COVID in order to jibe them up with Trump’s minimizing its threat. It was pushed to save Trump’s face. The disease defined itself long before it came to the USA. There’s no excuse for flu comparisons or comparisons to other pandemics. Those are history. COVID is now.
Kudlow is approaching COVID strictly from an economic / money position. What he doesn’t get is “opening the economy to save it” is exactly what will break it. If you open the economy you give COVID what it needs to explode. People in close association with each other. If you do that you’ll flood the healthcare industry with cases and break it. A broken healthcare system in the midst of a pandemic…a broken economy. The idea behind “flattening the curve” is not to end up with a curve with less area under it than if we just let it rip. It’s to drag that area out along the X axis so we don’t flood under resourced hospitals with cases. It allows medical facilities to treat patients, supply themselves and allocate critical but limited equipment ( like ventilators ) to more folks. So you “social distance” to save the economy.
COVID is a virus. It does whatever Mother Nature had in mind for it. You manage it as such.

Lar, propaganda isn’t facts, even if you believe it and don’t know it’s propaganda. The fact is, at the time you were spouting your propaganda about containment, everyone who isn’t an idiot and/or a believer in propaganda that was paying attention to actual facts knew what you were saying was not factual.
And hot tip, Lar: anything your president believes and then says is likely to be not just wrong, but propaganda, though all of you are so far up each others asses that your can’t even tell the difference. And that’s not to say it’s a well planned sort of propaganda - it doesn’t have to be a well thought out campaign, not with the way you guys roll. There is no economy without people. Political economy, the academic term for economics, has as one of its two root words a word that comes from the Greek word for citizen. An economy without people is like a restaurant without food. Even in a purely economic sense, the loss of hundreds of thousands to millions of people would be absolutely devastating to an economy, far more than shutting it down for a few months or even longer. But, of course, that’s not why we’re shutting it down.

Regarding his meltdown today when Yamiche Alcindor asked him a simple question regarding his claim that NY would need 30-40k ventilators, it’s clear that Trump suffers from Logophobia, or fear of words.
Symptoms include:
Breathlessness
Excessive sweating
Nausea
Dry mouth
Feeling sick
Shaking
Heart palpitations
Inability to think clearly
A fear of dying
Becoming mad or losing control
A sensation of detachment from reality
A full blown anxiety attack
This happens to him at literally every presser and event where he has to read off a teleprompter, forcing him to read others’ words and respond to others’ questions. The only time he’s not like this when speaking in public is when he gets to control what he says, like at his MAGA imbecile roundups.
I’m not joking. He has a cognitive disability that’s turned into a psychosis-inducing phobia. He can’t handle other people’s words, and thus ideas. He can only process his own. He should be in a mental hospital, not the WH. Most of his most ardent followers probably have similar problems.

The facts at the time showed that the virus wasn’t contained. Nor was it “airtight” as he said. Kudlow isn’t being ridiculed in hindsight. We knew at the time that he was lying through his teeth! This article must be updated.
There’s an em dash in there. The most generous interpretation is that Kudlow said, “At the time I made that statement, the facts were - [that the virus was] - contained.” Even with that. the best that can be said is that Kudlow is/was either an ignorant fool or a damned liar. My money is on the latter.
