Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) on Sunday called out his Republican colleagues who turned President Biden’s initiative of sending people door-to-door trying to get more people vaccinated into a fear-mongering tactic aimed at discouraging more Americans from getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
There is only one person with the obsessive charisma capable of sending people to these stances: Donald Trump. People like Cruz and McConnell evoke derision more than anything else and certainly not “charisma”.
The GOP should never have succumbed to this. It was short-term gain , but at a tremendous cost to everyone but the criminals and scoundrels who gained from it.
When we learn of the depth and breadth of this selfish grift the people most disturbed will include a large number of Republicans.
“It’s absolute insanity,” Kinzinger said. “Now, what President Biden said — and maybe he could have said it slightly different — is, we’re willing to come to your house to give you the vaccine. At no point was anybody saying they’re going to break down your door and jam a vaccine in your arm, despite your protest.”
Is Kinzinger also taking his rhetoric too far? He seems to be suggesting that Biden is calling for door-to-door administration of the vaccine. I was not aware of that. I thought that Biden was calling merely for door-to-door outreach to encourage people to go get the vaccine.
Apparently, many members of the reactionary’s party believe that it’s more important for the Biden administration to appear to fail, thereby increasing their electoral chances, than it is for their constituents to avoid a possibly deadly infection.
Equally apparently, some folks aren’t that good at catching on to how they’re being sold up the river.
The insanity is built by an algorithm and can’t be changed. It began before the Rumpian reign of error and terror and has exploded on all the platforms available to them; brought to by advertisers and other grifters reaping profits.
Fat chance this will happen, but I am glad Adam Kinzinger said it.
Kinzinger demanded that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and other GOP leaders to call out “these garbage politicians, these absolute clown politicians playing on your vaccine fears for their own selfish gain.”
But Adam nailed it because it doesn’t really matter what Joe actually said, it was something that the Trumpers could twist into the “gov’t is coming to your home to make you take the shot”.
Just remember how they twisted Obama’s supposedly saying “If you like your doctor, then you can keep your doctor”? He said a form of this, he elaborated more fully on this, but they heard was you can keep your doctor, which would be possible in 100% of the cases.
If the bulk of R’s were anything like Kinzinger, the country would benefit greatly. Not saying he is perfect (all politicians are politicians), but he at least lives in a reality-based world and is not working directly for the Russians or the remaining Koch brother.
That is a pretty low bar, but this is what we have come to.
There was a Robert A. Heinlein short book called Podkayne of Mars…in which Podkayne’s younger brother opined (in the First Person to the reader) that he knew evil (which he lamented
that his sister did not catch on to fast enough).
We did not catch on to Trumpism fast enough.
It certainly did not help that our political institutions were hampered by norms that Trump quickly eliminated by converting all speech and action to legal versus illegal.
We should have known this from the start, but the money to be made off of a Walking Train Wreck like Trump was too sweet.
“Our party has been hijacked. My party has been hijacked.” Let us not forget that Kinzinger voted >90% for the Trump Legislative Agenda and voted for Trump in the 2020 election. He has hijacked himself. Would that be electoral masturbation?
A bit OT but looks like Trump is a bit nervous about Kevin McCarthy. Kevin will speak and be very good? Not sure what this means except maybe he’s encouraging lying to Congress.
And that’s how low the bar has been dropped, we’re now praising someone who is commenting on something not political, or shouldn’t be political.
The internet trolls and their trolling ways have won at declare that there are two, or more, realities.
Adam Savage of Mtythbuster’s would frequently repeat: “I reject your reality, and substitute my own”. The Trumps stole it and made it so.
Kinzinger is lamenting that the true Trumpy idiots have taken control. I probably disagree with all of Kinzinger’s policy position, but at least he had policy positions.
