Kinzinger Demands GOP Leaders Respond To Officer’s Grief At Downplaying Of Jan. 6

I tend to agree with you on this one.

In a new letter, a DC Metropolitan police officer expresses his naked grief and trauma after being “beaten with fists, metal objects, stripped of my issued badge, radio and ammunition magazine and electrocuted numerous times with a Taser” during the Capitol attack on January 6.

What happened to the police officer is awful and should not have happened. Yet it is but a small fraction of what happens to very many individual Black people every single day at the hands of police officers. He is experiencing a small fraction of what they experience. And Republicans couldn’t care less; the police couldn’t care less.

As to Kinzinger, no he is in the right party. Trump did not suddenly change between election day and Jan. 6th. Kinzinger voted for Trump: he must reckon with that. He must reckon with being a Republican. There is no excuse for being a Republican.

I think that Republicans who are downplaying the insurrection had a different experience that day. They were not paralyzed with fright because they knew that the rioters were their own people and would spare them. The Democrats knew that they were targets.

Republicans have become secure in their ability to break the law, lie, cheat and incite violence with impunity because they have been protected by Trump, rightwing media and many police organizations. Republicans’ responses to January 6 just confirm what we know to be true, that they are utterly lacking empathy and care for no one but themselves. If it doesn’t affect them personally, it never happened.

What I wish they would do is release more pictures to the press of the damage that was done and the bill to the taxpayers.

Think about how it must feel to belong to a party which you have seen over the years become less interested in governing through the rule of law and instead governing through authoritarianism instead of democracy. A party that once professed economic conservatism, which then promoted tax cuts while waging two wars on our credit card while also supporting the absolute farce known as “trickle down economics.” They saw the same statistics as we did, which clearly demonstrated stagnant wages over multiple decades. Liz Cheney has chosen to stay in that party and has tried to steer it away from authoritarianism and insurrection, but she is failing due to being in the minority. Kinzinger is getting the same treatment.

That party did all of this to feed more mammon to their corporate masters, who in turn fed more mammon into the reelection coffers of the party hacks through dark money. A party that governs in the interest of business and authoritarianism is, by definition, fascist. And now that party is trying to maintain power by selecting who can vote. It is time for the GOP to die and I write this as someone who left the Republican party a long time ago.
