Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), one of the few Republican lawmakers who’ve been outspoken in denouncing ex-President Donald Trump, announced on Friday morning that he will not run for reelection in the 2022 midterms.
While not surprised at all by this “news”, I still feel bad that the one and only principled GOPer (well, guess I gotta throw Liz Cheney at least partway into that bin too) is going to exit stage left.
The party is now completely in the hands of the lunatics, with nary a voice of reason anywhere to hear.
I was raised in his district and I still keep in touch with some who live there. Most of my childhood friends are all-in on MAGA. They’ll nominate a Q-Anon type and they’ll win in a landslide.
He had the courage to stand up and be on the committee, but rather than try and hold the seat and make the case for sanity, he’s going to let TFG essentially appoint his replacement. Simply bowing out drops him more than a few rungs down the respect ladder for me.
Actually, one less district for them to run a MAGA candidate. Illinois is losing a House seat, and his is the one on the chopping block. The state is on course to do an extremely pro-Dem gerrymander.
Trump is just the personification of the reactionary, racist, angry America. Trump could croak tomorrow and the GOP is not going to get any saner. Forget the pro-business, pro-family BS; the Republican party and its supporters are now only guided by hatred, outrage, resentment and the hunger for retribution. I do not see any way to keep the country together, especially now that Lachlan Murdoch has proven to be even a worse reactionary than his father and is willing to do anything to stoke the fire of hatred.
And yet enough voters cast their ballots for them to create an almost complete shut down of policy development and implementation at a crucial, dangerous, and potentially disastrous moment in the nation’s, and the world’s future. As much as I despise the McCarthys, McConnells, Grahams, Blunts — you know the rest — there’s a deep, deep rot in the bowels of the body politic. It is festering as we speak and threatens to fulminate into violence, and it is for the most part white and male.
