I heard that Trump is in his Fat Elvis stage and realized that it was a perfect description of Donald.

Walz was the safe, “Do no harm” pick. The outer left of the Dem party is famously punishing of politicians that stray from their uber-liberal orthodoxy. Apparently a Shapiro pick was fraught with potential for a subsequent outpouring of angst and anger due to his Middle East stances on several matters, along with his advocacy for school vouchers. Shapiro is outspoken and opinionated, so a thorough combing of his past would have probably yielded even more fodder for the GOP to harp on. Now, with Walz, Dems don’t have to spend the next week or more countering a bunch of BS, costing Harris precious momentum.

Harris did not want to “Pull a Vance”, a la Trump’s disastrous VP choice.

They’ve been expressing real disappointment since they announced Walz a little while ago. They’ve tried to hide it but its kinda there with every other comment they’ve made about him. They’ll get over it and come around, eventually, maybe, but not before they get their horserace bullshit commentary nonsense in…

They’ve got Dems sliced and diced into ‘progressives’ and everyone else it seems. Frankly, don’t know what that’s about other than being more or less divisive from the get-go.

Hubby and I were talking about her pick last night. Agreed that Shapiro has a lot to offer (and he’s young enough to be in the next generation) but that, on a certain level, he’s too smooth and polished to pull in some of the wavering folks, especially in fly-over country (a bit too much East Coast/West Coast vibe).

I told hubby I was pushing for Walz, who I knew nothing about a couple of weeks ago, because he has a very solid, folksy, guy next door sort of vibe. Told hubby I thought that might be the way to woo the folks who are yearning for someone to relate to, but aren’t sure Kamala‘s it.

Excellent. I am pleased. I was a big fan of Kamala for 2020, was sorry to see her stumble, but boy oh boy, has she grown into the role. Yippee!

To update the old joke.

J.D. Vance: So, do people look at me and say “Look at the good writer.” Or “Look at the successful venture capitalist.” Or “Look at the good father.” But fuck just one couch and…

Wow, a bold choice, a Progressive as VP! A great big FU to Pelosi and the other Corporate Dems too! Maybe I can get a pony now!

They are betting it all on throwing the election to the House state delegations via their small-red-counties refusing to certify thereby causing the red states to not cert (and maybe some blue but not likely). Given the quality of their lawyers, i think they really believe this is a winning strategy. Since these small red counties have been trying this frequently, i would like a good rundown on how they all resolved (courts, state officials, individual actions?)

Though he was never VP, let’s not forget Eugene McCarthy, the first presidential candidate I ever canvassed for (when I was in high school). And let’s throw in Bob Dylan and the Coen brothers, for good measure. (Prince, too, I guess, though I feel no connection to him.) So cool about Mondale as your law partner. I had lunch with him once at an event, when he was very old. The political scientists at the table were furious with me because, once I’d gotten talking with Mondale about my grandparents and other family who had farmed in Minnesota, all he wanted to do was reminisce about different towns and eras in Minnesota, and they never got to pick his brain about whatever it was they wanted to pick his brain about. It seemed to me they were missing the most important thing they were witnessing about the man: down to earth, knew and loved Minnesota, interested in people and cared about them, their lives.
