Judge Tells Jan. 6 Insurrectionist That Trying To Overturn An Election Isn’t Patriotism, Actually

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson on Wednesday put in explicit terms how Trumpland’s rebranding of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists as oppressed political dissidents is utter hogwash.

despite clear evidence that the siege was anything but a violent effort to overthrow the election.

Fix please.

Damn right it’s not patriotism! Nice and succinct. Considering the judge’s words for a t-shirt. Why can’t the Repubes understand and say this? Throw the bums out!

Traitors for Trump. Yet all I’m seeing from the courts to date are a few slaps on the hand for misdemeanors, not what you would expect with insurrectionists and traitors.

Jackson told Dresch that his vote in the 2020 election “doesn’t count any more than anyone else’s.”

“You don’t get to cancel them out and call for a war because you don’t like the results of the election,” she said. “You called yourself and the others patriots, but that’s not patriotism. Patriotism is loyalty to country, loyalty to the Constitution, not loyalty to a single head of state. That’s the tyranny we rejected on July 4th of 1776.”

That is an incredibly succinct statement that deserves to be broadcast far and wide. Just because Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump wrap themselves in the flag (often, literally!) and “Christian Nationalism,” doesn’t mean we should cede patriotism to them.

Thank you for pointing out that error by the writer for forgetting to add a “NOT” between “was” and “anything”. As a person whose job requires writing complex, complete and technical documents, I truly sympathize with the author.

I really think this simple comment by the judge is for most Trump voters the whole issue and as part of their sentences should be tattooed on the forehead of all convicted seditionist:

Jackson told Dresch that his vote in the 2020 election “doesn’t count any more than anyone else’s.”

In my opinion from what I have noticed, Trump voters think Trump won NOT because he got the most votes, but that he got the most votes from White people. That is Trump voters think their votes count more than “anyone else’s” and therefore this comment by the judge not only nails the situation, as part of their sentences this comment, “My vote counts no more than anyone else’s”, should be stamped on their foreheads.

There will come better comments than this one, but what is imperative is pushback from every communication source against those who would destroy our Republic, not matter what verbiage they concoct.

All this started as a Trump grift, from the Jump. We have to transition to spending more time, as a country, to some needed chores and tasks.

As the cowpokes would say: “We’re burnin’ daylight!”

Not patriotism, and not “Christian” anything. They are, at most, as patriotic as they are Christian.

Don’t forget that in 2020 gained traction with brown and black voters.

The Republican president gained six percentage points among black men, and five percentage points among Hispanic women. It means some voters changed their minds, after either not voting or voting for another candidate in 2016.

But this might be due to the Christo-fascists among voters.

They do talk about how they’re patriots, and throw fits if you even vaguely allude to, say, slavery as if it were possibly a mistake that should not have been. But I remember decades ago when certain prominent figures were pretty vituperative toward the nation and didn’t talk much about any sort of patriotic devotion to the ideals it so often falls short of. The Sarandons of today, who naively hope for a complete collapse that would immiserate millions, are their intellectual children. But most people today are actively working toward getting closer to those ideals, and I hear the concept invoked often. Maybe we should talk about it more, but we live it, and that counts for something. We want everyone to have a shot, to get opportunities to show what they can be. Education, the more lucrative professions, all sorts of institutions are far more accessible than they were when I was a kid. It’s not anywhere near perfect, but it’s better than then. Joe talks about this often. Al Franken said it quite well: We love the country not like a child, but like a spouse, who sees the flaws and loves it anyway.

I doubt Mr Dresch learned anything from the judge’s comments.

I keep hearing from them that they don’t know anyone who didn’t vote for Trump, therefore the election must be crooked. They cannot imagine that the universe of people they know is quite small and incestuous with everyone reading and watching the same drivel.

We are rapidly losing the ability to govern because facts are thrown out in favor of memes and slogans. I sense some sadness in the judge’s words when she states that the defendant is not a “political prisoner”, but rather someone who tried to subvert the electoral process.

The inability to think through simple problems and ideas is a real curse that is exploited by FOX and right wing crusaders at every available opportunity. You will never hear a right-winger quote or refer to a scientific or statistical study unless it is a fake one commissioned by some RW “think” tank. They all play at the edges of people’s worst impulses and embrace reductionist “solutions” to complex and nuanced problems. For example, the answer to any crime issue is more cops and more jail terms - always and forever. That is why we lock up a greater percentage of our population than any other country going. Nuance is not allowed to exist in deeply polarized societies - you are either a hero or a crisis actor, there is no other option.

Absolutely. She is a hero. My only wish would be she get to hear all of the cases involving the insurrection.
