Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) didn’t just have a hand in his state’s redistricting process this cycle.
Alabama and Florida
Per an earlier agreement, both parties will now ask the Florida Supreme Court to intervene and issue a decision by December 31, 2023 to give the legislature time to enact any remedial maps.

Hmmmmm, perhaps they should go ahead and start working on that like, um, now?!?!
Ah, the ol’ GOP playbook: if the truth just won’t do, lie; and a corollary, if you can’t win fairly, cheat.
Why does Lucy and a football come to mind?
In case anyone was wondering, SCOFL is very bad.
If DeSantis looses the Republican presidential nomination, I shudder to think what the FL lege will do to poor old Ron when he comes back to Tallahassee.
(that’s shudder in anticipation)
I strongly suspect there will be some significant foot-dragging in resolving this map issue, so InSantis can appeal a change in the map as being too close to the election. I mean, after all, didn’t some other States successfully make that plea last year to delay new maps until AFTER the election and the courts said ‘sure!’?
No need to bother with that. They can just uphold the existing map, which is what I fully expect they will do.
And DeSantis seemed perplexed that he got booed in Jacksonville after that racist mass murder.
Sorry buddy. There are few things more racist than stealing a congressional seat from more that 100,000 black voters.
a shudder of schadenfreuden
This behavior by the red states, where they produce an illegal gerrymander and then use it for one or more elections while the courts try to force them to create a legal map, really is intolerable. It’s allowing Republicans to win elections that they otherwise wouldn’t, and doing so while breaking the law, and really flouting it in cases like this. The FL legislature Republicans knew this was wrong, and even tried to fight it but eventually gave in, knowing it would be overturned. It’s quite likely that Democrats would currently control the House if all these illegal acts had been thrown out already.
Republicans really are giving up on democracy and marching towards believing only they should win elections and have power. It’s right in line with other authoritarian nations that have “elections”, a la Hungary or Russia. The court system really needs to confront this more strongly and not allow elections under illegal maps to go forward anymore, it’s just not right to give some Republican power when it’s based on an illegal election map.
The GOP is a flaming bag of shit in the living room of America.
Come on. DeSantis is just doing what he thinks is white.
It doesn’t help that Putin is visiting the tyrant with whom donald is in love, Kim Jong Un, and they’ll be scheming on arming Russia with more weapons in order to defeat Ukraine. The next president, who I believe will be Biden, must be prepared to combat this (pardon the wording), and a repub president won’t care at all because as we’re realizing they don’t care about that country and about democracy. Sorry if this seems somewhat OT but when I read authoritarians and I read repubs.
The eloquence, the beauty of the words, it’s underwhelming.
Authoritarians come from all political stripes, though in the US right now the most dangerous are the ones in the Republican party. I’m not sure that translates around the world though…Xi, Orban and Putin (to pick a random three) aren’t really the same policy wise but they want to control their nations. Our biggest problem is if we elect Trump or someone who wants to follow the same trend here, because the next Republican elected like that will follow through on forcing us into something like what Orban has (probably the easiest model for them to follow). They may not be able to get away with it, even though our system reacts slowly it does react and they are losing badly, but they might just pull it off to the point that it requires a lot more radical action to eject them out of office. It’s far better if we just don’t elect the assholes in the first place.
With DeSantis’ stupid and petulant decision to NOT meet with President Biden during his trip to FL to review the impact of Idalia is beyond the pale. DeSantis is putting his personal, political ambitions ahead of the interests of the residents and businesses of FL. DeSantis is trying to “out Donnie” Donnie in his childish, self-serving antics. It is politically tone deaf. DeSantis, like DJT, likes being an asshole.
