Johnson Tries To Avoid McCarthy's Fate In First Speakership Showdown Of New Congress

Incumbent Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) aims to avoid his predecessor’s fate Friday — both his ultimate firing and the humiliating 15-round gauntlet to get the job before it — as the vote for a new speaker opens the 119th Congress. President-Elect Donald Trump has endorsed Johnson, but the speaker has already lost the one Republican…

If at “Frist” you don’t succeed, try, try again!

One wonders how often Johnson consults his “Porn Meter.”

Seems a little early for popcorn, but I love it, so I’ll make a big bowl for the day!

Wouldn’t it be crazy/great if Jeffries was elected?!!!

Ideally Rethugliklans will drag this out until Jan. 20 without certifying the vote and Kamala Harris will be sworn in.

Johnson: “Here’s the deal: if you elect me without any stunts, the first round of raw milk is on me!”

Just a silly cat picture.

That’s ok - Pelosi is on her way back from Europe after her hip replacement. She’ll do the math and keep her counsel as to how successful Johnson will be.

If there was one skill Nancy had, it was how to marshal and count votes, something Johnson and the GQP have failed to learn.

This might go on for two or maybe three rounds of voting just so a few R’s can show discontent with Johnson, but I predict he’ll be Speaker at the end of the day without too much drama. The R’s are itching to get moving on Trump’s agenda.

Yes, this seems the most likely outcome, but what the fuck is Trump’s agenda? These GOP Congresscritters are going to be working overtime securing exemptions from tariffs, migrant roundups, Medicaid cuts, and IRA funding clawbacks for their districts/donors. It’s going to be like that scene from It’s a Wonderful Life–“I don’t have any illegal immigrants, they’re in that meat-packing plant in Ted’s district!”

Kate Riga’s comment about having to take math in college, and opting for the course Math in Society. Makes me laugh.

TSF hasn’t even taken office and I’m already tired of these clowns.

If they squeeze in a few pre-prandial whiskeys, we might see another attempted slug to the face among sociopaths. Is that violent alcoholic from Wisconsin still in the House?

Remember, R’s - it’s not about the numbers, or kowtowing to the never-Trumpers in the mainstream caucus, it’s about you - you making a statement, drawing a line and making your mark in history without compromising or backing down. What does it matter if a Democrat is Speaker, if your peers know what a badass iconoclast you are?

No. No, that would be horrible. What’s Jeffries going to be able to get passed?

In the coming administration, success may be more about what democrats can prevent from passing.

A good indication of how stupid and unresponsive the media is:

Bob Good Does A Prank, Brian Kilmeade Faceplants

Former Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), who lost his primary, tweeted Friday that he would not be voting for Mike Johnson, causing a truly unbelievable number of people to freak out before realizing that he is no longer in Congress.

I mean, really stupid.

Presidents in recent history get most of what they’ll ever accomplish legislatively done in the first year of their term. This Congress and this President may scuttle that trend, so dysfunctional and fractious are all their relationships. Unfortunately what will get pushed through, what they all finally agree on, will be the most hateful, most damaging of Trump’s policy pursuits. Bills shot down for cancer research or feeding orphans, while bills to fund the wall or concentration camps pass.
If nothing else gets done the Right’s lust for hate and racism will be sated.
