NEW YORK (AP) — Former school principal Jamaal Bowman defeats 16-term U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel in New York Democratic congressional primary.
Changing of the guard.
Good. Engel was a relic. Dems in safe blue seats are on notice. Being tight with leadership will not save you. Represent the people who sent you.
A fresh face and one of the future for the Democratic party. Glad to see it.
Didn’t this happen 2 weeks ago? Worth repeating, glad Engel is out.
Cool! I have a dislike of political dynasties because dynastic power tends to suffocate new ideas. Best wishes to Congressman-elect Bowman as he brings vigor and a new voice to represent his constituents!
This is good. There’s a reason that there are elections every two years.
Hopefully the Dems are getting the notice that they need to keep delivering and being progressive, and that just being the incumbent isn’t sufficient.
Voting matters…
Voting have consequences…
Remember there are more Ds + Is
So let’s survive Covid
AND
VOTE OUT Trump, TrumpCrimeFamily & Enablers and the RethugniCON Criminal Enterprise!
My new congressman. Hope he doesn’t swallowed up by Ms. Ocasio and her people. The Congressional black caucus can school him.
Engel was the kind of dinosaur who still thought you could 'work with Republicans" – and wound up consistently getting rolled by them. Good riddance.
Finally… there are plenty more that should go.
The problem I see is that many of the idealistic progressives either think Russian and other foreign interference in our elections either didn’t happen or doesn’t matter.
I don’t see how you can implement progressive agenda when we’re not in control of our sovereignty esp ignoring our opponents are now backed by Russian military intelligence.
From the article itself, 2nd paragraph…
Many votes cast by mail in the race have yet to be counted, but an AP analysis of absentee ballots returned so far indicated Friday that Bowman’s lead from votes cast in person is too large for Engel to overcome.
Where did you find progressives that think Russian interference did not happen? I’ve not seen anything like that.
“… we’re not in control of our sovereignty esp ignoring our opponents are now backed by Russian military intelligence…”
How do we quantify this? I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m saying it’s impossible to know how successful they have been. I suppose we can say they delivered the WH to Trump, but we don’t know how much that success can be attributed to the GRU.
I see the Democrats have made a commitment and intend to see it through. Nice to see them defining themselves rather than let the GOP and MSM do that. If the Democratic Party is to become a progressive one this is how they show the American people they mean it.
They learn it as they go. Once they’re inside and getting the briefings on what is really going on out there.
Holy crap. This is a major sign.
“The campaign was the latest proxy battle between the party’s progressive and pragmatic wings.” I think describing the Engel as being part of a ‘pragmatic’ wing of the democratic party is biased and ultimately inaccurate. I think describing Engel and other corporatist, or neo-liberal, hawkish (he voted for the Iraq invasion, against the Iran nuclear deal, against banning the sale of cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia, the list goes on) democrats as ‘pragmatic’ is totally misleading and lazy writing. Just as bad if not worse than calling him a ‘moderate.’ Pragmatic implies being sensible or realistic. I think if your gosl is to maintain constant war, or support nuclear arms proliferation, or increase obscene differences in wealth, or any other host of neo liberal positions, then yea, label them ‘pragmatic.’ I think those positions are radical and insane but that is my opinion. I guess its in the eye of the beholder. So TPM please be more precise and less editorial in your news writing. Thank you.
He’s a much younger man, a man of color, and much more progressive than Engel. This is a change for the good, I think. This is a time for bold ideas and a fresh outlook on what good government can and should do for their citizens. Best of all, people are receptive to a new message, a progressive message, perhaps more so now than ever before, coming on top of failed Republican ideas and their failed ideology.
It’s time for a new “contract with America”.
