Good. I don’t know anything about Engel, but if he’s served 16 terms, that’s about 10 or 12 terms too many. Elected office is not a career choice, it’s supposed to be a public service.
The campaign was the latest proxy battle between the party’s progressive and pragmatic wings.
I strongly disagree with the AP’s description of the less-progressive wing of the Democratic Party as the ‘pragmatic’ wing.
The world has changed considerably over the past few decades, and many ‘pragmatic’ Democrats have failed to change with it. Their political instincts were learned in the 1980s and 1990s, and those instincts are out of touch today.
Nobody’s going to rally around the Democratic Party if it tries to muddle what it stands for. Even Joe Biden has come to realize that, a fact that has pleasantly surprised me this year. But much of the Congressional Democratic leadership hasn’t. (Yes, I’m looking at you, Steny.) When candidates like Bowman win the Dem nomination in safely Dem districts, it moves the party as a whole in the right direction.
It’s not about how many terms the guy served. It’s what he did, or didn’t do, while in Congress. Look at Engel’s record. Glad he’ll be gone. I like what I’ve heard from Bowman so far.
Engel is one of the elderly Democrats who needs to retire. This is a very, very good development.
Very common thought on Sanders left left.
A good starting point: ‘Rigged,’ by David Shimer: An Excerpt.
FBI investigating whether Russian money went to NRA to help Trump.
Not just Trump:
How Putin’s proxies helped funnel millions into GOP campaigns.
Yeah, you’re probably correct. The problem with many NYC-area “liberals” is the overriding presence of Wall Street in their calculations.
Long past time … someone must have held a mirror under Engel’s nostrils.
I admire your optimism and faith in humans. ![]()
Yep, very current case in point from Illinois. Even Dem’s can be grifting assholes…
There’s a reason that stuff regarding Russia continually gets strong bipartisan support. And it’s not because of anything that gets public.
Jamaal Bowman: Blazing Trails While Black.

Weird how TPM covers down-ballot progressives in a favorable light, but utterly castigates someone like Bernie Sanders at the national level, who these people generally look up to.
That’s where I’ve seen it as well.
Whoop!

Engle has been an excellent Congressperson. I’m glad he lost, but one can be happy for a change without denigrating the man’s solid lifetime of service. Engel is a good man — do you really need to insult him?
Ah, here we go with the Israel smears. What a shock.
Being tight with leadership will not save you. Represent the people who sent you.
Um, both of these things can happen. Simultaneously. And a positive outcome can occur.
Yes, all best wishes to Bowman and good luck in serving New York, but where’s the political dynasty. Engle like too many was simply an entrenched congress critter overstaying his welcome.
Poor Nancy. Her scheme to prevent primary challenges by progressives to her bought-and-paid-for incumbents has been foiled again.
